Pierre Gonon

Saint-Joseph Syrah 2020

What a difference a little time and air makes 🤪. A little game a little iron and pepper and black fruit that became more expressive as time passed. Light and elegant. I think I got lucky. — 3 months ago

Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2015

Pop and pour yesterday, at which point it was absolutely stunning. Notes from 24 hrs open. On the nose: soft cola, olive brine, wet stone, a touch of game, cool sandalwood. Absolutely spectacular aromatics. On the palate: fantastic acidity, tomato leaf, olive, black raspberry, lovely density with very finely grained tannin on the juicy finish. This is spectacular. — 3 years ago

Château de Pibarnon (Comte de Saint Victor)

Bandol Mourvedre Blend 2015

Always a fav. First taste of 2015 vintage, nice balance for the year, extraction is deft and carries some finesse to it. As usual, complex, layered, full of goutte de terroir. Layers of cherry from crushed to soaked, slight hint of prune, raspberry confiture, game, fur, roast beef, juniper, forest and cedar, pure garrigue, licorice root, ceylon cinnamon, chaparral, powdered sugar, 5 spice, singed tobacco, graphite, bitter cocoa. Still taut, the tannins need time to relax, but I think they will always have persistence in the wine. Ok with me. — 6 years ago

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Nearing its peak drinkability, this long forgotten gift is full of broody character. And coincidentally or not it has game blood and rustic notes. The wine well beyond drinkable. The age has rounded out the tannins and made the fruit exuberant. Tell you what, this is way better than the finally. Wish the HBO producers would have had the same patience. To patient wine and f-ed up endings. Name your house… — 6 months ago

I loved all those wines and beers named after GofT! I wish he would just finish the books. I guarantee a different outcome than the series. I’m House Stark all the way! What about you?

1990 E. Guigal Cote Rotie La Landonne. Decanted just before serving. Great acid and some some fruit with fat on the finish. Spice and pepper have died out. Luscious dark fruit, great texture, still some veg to it. No huge fruit, smoke, or game notes. Delicious. Drank with beef koobideh. Perfect. — 6 years ago

Domaine Tempier

Bandol Rosé Blend 2018

The same Tempier game - deep, textbook, best at cellar temp for nuanced aromas and weighted viscosity.

2018 is losing its fruit, at the end of the window where hints and dried versions of fresh fruit and spices still hang around.

Dried orange peel, grapefruit, peach, and soft red melon and furry raspberry.
