E. Guigal

Château d'Ampuis Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2016

Holy balls! I need more nostrils to smell this. Brooding with game, bramble, and coffee grounds. Palate is slick but well concentrated with weight and tannin that linger spectacularly. Not cheap. — 2 months ago

Bernard Burgaud

Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2017

Lyle Fass
9.5

Nose starts out tight. Then blossoms into deep berry fruit, game, smoked meats, florals, smoke, leather, so complex. So classic. Palate is super serious and super young but has wonderful balance, freshness and depth. I just popped this and it is perfect to follow along for the rest of the day. Really great energy and freshness and expanding mid palate of berry fruit is developing. Awesome texture and concentration while having a substantial refined yet there tannic backbone. Why Burgaud ages so well. Long finish. I’ll update as it airs.

Now after 5-6 hours of air this is really coming into its own. So olivey and floral. Stunning blueberry. Game. Meat. Just gorgeous. Palate is full of fruit, freshness and finesse. Gorgeous sappiness and terrific acidity. A baby but what a wine.

Domaine Auguste Clape

Renaissance Cornas Syrah 2010

Awesome vintage and at a great point in its evolution. Long animalistic syrah, game, cigarette ash, rabbit fur, background of black pepper, smooth rounded tannin. Great bouquet jumping out, light on palate — 5 years ago

La Landonne Côte-Rotie Syrah

B
10

1990 E. Guigal Cote Rotie La Landonne. Decanted just before serving. Great acid and some some fruit with fat on the finish. Spice and pepper have died out. Luscious dark fruit, great texture, still some veg to it. No huge fruit, smoke, or game notes. Delicious. Drank with beef koobideh. Perfect. — 5 years ago

Château de Beaucastel

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend 1998

Quite the difference from 2000 vintage I had in October. Powerful and intense requiring a lengthy decant, layered with both red and black fruits, lots of spices, hints of licorice and game. Finishes long with excellent depth and richness. ❤️ — 5 years ago

Fantastic. 30 minutes in the decanter. Possibly the best thing they make. 83 cases made . — 6 years ago

Château Gruaud Larose

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1982

Delectable Wine
9.6

This bottle of 1982 Gruaud-Larose came direct from the château cellars. It is just pure joy on the nose with fabulous scents of black fruit, hung game (less so than previous bottles), clove and a faint aroma of a stately home. It manages to offer both ample fruit and life-affirming complexity. The palate has aged little since I last tasted it; there's more red fruit here, with freshly rolled tobacco, cedar and a touch more spiciness on the finish than previous tastings, with a sweet yet structured finish. This may well represent the finest bottle that I have encountered. (Neal Martin, Vinous, January 2023) — 2 years ago

Château Latour

Premier Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1940

Roses, camphor, leather and deep tobacco fruit. A tart and game midpalate. This is serious and beautifully balanced. Wow — 5 years ago
