Such a classic Les Vergelesses nose. Brambly, bright and damson all at the same time with gorgeous earthen dampness. Big cherry, cranberry, cranberry bog and spice. Really compelling spice and so much depth. Palate is stunning. Gorgeous, tensile mid season and black cherry fruit with wonderful clarity and precision. Some wild mint on the nose now. Great concentration and density. Very sappy. Perfect balance and so pure. Finish is elegant with gorgeously ripe tannins. What a vintage 23 is at Girard. The nose gets some nice Twizzler action after some air and my goodness the fruit is just transcendent. After two hours the nose is gorgeous with moss, spice and wet earth. Juicy palate and just gorgeous fruit. Fresh and energetic. Wonderful. — 8 days ago

Big, brambly nose with lots of red cherries, mid season sour cherries, earth and mineral. Really clean and evocative. Palate is juicy and so precise. Very clean and a lovely mineral/fruit wash on the finish. Great depth, freshness and terrific concentration. Not elegant but this wine never is. It has such impact for little $$. Nice, ripe tannins and serious structure. This is always best at 5 years old. — a month ago

Light to mid golden in colour. Aromatics of yellow orchard fruits and melon with a touch of honey/beeswax. An oxidative style - almost unctuous in texture. Great flavours. I don’t drink many Loire Valley wines - this was very good. — 2 months ago

Presented to me blind at Tasting Group. The wine appears bright yellow with medium viscosity; no signs of sediment, gas or particles. On the nose, the wine is developing with ripe orchard fruit: stone fruits, lemons, white flowers, lanolin and minerals. On the palate the wine is off-dry with high acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and full of character. The alcohol is medium+. Initial conclusions: this could be Chenin Blanc, Riesling or Chardonnay from France, Germany or the United States. But I didn’t get any petrol so I eliminated Riesling and I don’t think you could get the balance of fruit and high acid from California Chardonnay (and the oak would probably be so pronounced). So I called Chenin Blanc from France, from the Loire, Vouvray Demi-Sec. Well…I should have known this could be Joly! Close…but some miles away from each other and I’d like to have the confidence to call producer in this case. Drink now through 2034. — a month ago

Solid, gritty and aromatic Fichots. Even in a forward vintage like 17 Fichots is still a bit closed at 8 years old. Needs 3-4 years as Fichots needs more time than any Pernand 1er Cru. — 3 months ago
