La Scolca

Bianco Secco Cortese 2018

My first white bottle selection wasn’t available so I chose this instead. Not a bad consolation prize: apple, white peach, citrus nose, medium body, engaging acidity backed by minerality. Great accompaniment to the table’s seafood and chicken entrées. — a year ago

Rosantico Moscato Rosa 2009

So I realize that we’re suppose to have canceled this producer, but in our defense we were offered this wine as consolation when the Bandol we requested was OOS and there were no complaints.

Damn was this wine an epiphany — intensely fragrant with rose petals and geranium on the nose and palate. Ripe nectarines and blood orange with some nebulous savory herbal quality too. A really special wine to pair with a really fabulous birthday girl

Stupid young, but accessible with a long decant. Not likely the vintage to make old bones, but the consolation is that the ripe red and black cherry fruit and (relatively) soft structure make this thoroughly enjoyable in the short term. — 8 years ago

Enfield Wine Co.

Foot Tread Rosé Blend 2024

By now it should be clear - I am an Enfield fan. Have been for a long time. This foot treated Rosé is no exception. Sourced from a head trailed vineyard at 3000+ feet aka 1000 Meters. Welcome to the new California! 900 bottles made - get it while you can. Striking color. Incredible juice. Sour Haribo gummibears - the red ones. But seriously - Fresh strawberries the ones which actually have a taste, cranberry, raspberry and lime. Oh man what a treat. An “alpine wine”. 13.2%. If the tarifs will kill us this is consolation. — a year ago

Vigneto Giardino Rive di Colbertaldo Dry Prosecco di Valdobbiadene Superiore 2016

It's officially Spring in New England, as witnessed by the 4-6" of snow still covering our property. 🤨
This means it's chimnea time again 🔥 and I've collected some snow into a sizeable mound to act as our outdoor chill station for hopefully the next 6 weeks or so 🤞.
Today's theme is wines we can drink slightly colder and still have some appreciating quality.

Toasty brioche spread with a dollop of warm sugared butter, yum. We could drink this all afternoon. It was a comp bottle from our local 5 🌟 AAA restaurant after they gave my wife's coat to another lady, following an extensive wine dinner. It was of minor consolation on a chilly and snowy December night. We did get the coat back the following afternoon, and it was accompanied by this bottle. We're only a short drive from the restaurant, so the bottle was palatable then, and now.

Nice note. I hit “like” because of the note, not the wine. I’m not a Prosecco fan.

It's ok, prosecco is not a wine for many, especially those who buy from Lyle. We enjoy it infrequently.

Casa Emma

Gran Selezione Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2017

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of a couple of hours. In a year of low yields, a 2017 “Riserva” was not made however, we were fortunate enough to get this “Gran Selezione” and, spoiler alert: it’s not a mere consolation prize. The wine pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core. Medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. No signs of sediment. On the nose, the wine is intense and developing, with complex aromatics consisting of Montmorency cherry, orange pith, fresh sage, eraser head, cedar box, Pu’er tea, gravelly earth, and some subtle spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long with its tart, funky cherry character. A head turner and really, at this point, no-one should really be at all that surprised; it’s Casa Emma we’re talking about. Drinking generously now but has the stuffing to deliver the goods for another 10+ with ease. — 3 years ago

Sine Qua Non

Poker Face Syrah 2004

So tonite, I’m enjoying two great artists: Miles Davis, “Kind Of Blue,” 1959, and Manfred Krankl, “Poker Face,” 2004. My all-time favorite Jazz recording (consolation prize to Chet Baker), and my knock down, drag out, unwavering all-time favorite Non-barrel aged SQN Syrah. Fairly bold statement, right? Plenty of great SQN Syrah over the years. But none that over-stimulate the olfactory senses, and catapult the taste buds to warp speed every single time I pull the cork. 15.5% alcohol. Impenetrably dark, opaque, achromatic, inky, motor oil appearance. Off the charts aromatic exhibition of incense, spice box, black pepper, Blackberry liqueur, wet stones and floral notes. Similar palate profile. Definitely fruit driven complexity, but less noticeable oak this time along with some developing nuances of mushroom, forest floor and roasted game. Pure silk texture. Positively chewy. Concentrated and dense, yet subtle and nuanced. A huge wine that’s light on its feet. Stopwatch still running on the finish. Miles and Manfred. Always pushing the envelope, but still instantly recognizable styles. Art transcends genres. “Dedicated to M’s adopted Brother.” — 9 years ago
