Rattlesnake Rock Syrah 2018

Everybody seems to have glowing opinions of this, but mine was just a good wine and all the complexity in depth that I’m hearing about here I just didn’t get. A very good balance of strong flavors drank it across three days, dark pepper, and tobacco notes and ripe fruit and I will say without any overwhelming attendance. The structure was just incredible. Very good wine, maybe I’m just different than the other reviewers. — 2 months ago

Pooley

Coal River Valley Pinot Noir 2018

Very identifiable as Tasmanian Pinot - this one from the Coal River and the high performing Pooley Wines. Last tasting note here was way back 153 weeks ago. Red fruited - drinking this early in its drinking window. Light to medium weight - lovely Tassie purity. Fine tannins. — 3 years ago

Dry Stack Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2019

Hazy straw. Wonderful nose of lemon rind m, straw, and menthol. Full bodied palate of verbena, pear, citrus, birch, and a host others in layer upon layer. Firm acidity from entry to the slight mineral flintiness on the finish. Rich seafood or poultry dishes will shine especially well. I’m having mine with scallops and my drinking partner with Parmesan encrusted chicken. Drink now through 2024. — 5 years ago

Pooley

Pinot Noir 2018

Pale to mid Ruby - almost transparent in the glass. Very primary with fresh red fruits on nose and palate. Light to medium in palate weight but medium plus intensity. Great to have an embryonic young wine for a change. A wine destined to win multiple awards on the Australian Show circuit - from the new hot spot for Australian Pinot Noir - the Coal River Tasmania. — 6 years ago

Great suggestions — thanks. I’ve visited Tamar Valley before so it’ll be good to taste the south of the state. Adelaide-based, so in close proximity to plenty of good regions.

Pooley was a delight; the rieslings an outstanding surprise. Also had a surprising and charming visit to Every Man and His Dog.

2008 a good to very good vintage depending on the producer and region.

I’ve had the 2008 a few years ago. The bottle from my collection, better. This one is not in decline, just not as enjoyable. Still shows a fair amount of earthiness where the bottle from my collection did not. In fairness, I gave mine a good decant and this bottle had been open but not decanted.

R9 Coal River Riesling 2007

My last bottle unfortunately. See previous notes from 74 weeks ago and 130 weeks ago. Mid yellow in colour. Obvious parrafin/kerosene on the nose. On the palate ripe grapefruit, nectarine and a little chalkiness. Only 10.2%ABV but not overly sweet. Low acid. Drinking at its peak. Riesling in Tasmania is excellent and flies under the radar to an extent. — 5 years ago

Cornas Reynard (R) Syrah 2007

Allemand nightcap! From the terrific wine list at CUT Vegas. Allemand is truly one of my absolute favorite producers and this 07 Reynard from the master was superb. It’s deep, powerful and has a searing intensity. Ethereal and layered with dark fruit, coal smoke, black olive and violets.

There is superb concentration along with a firm tannic structure that is beginning to soften as it approaches its drinking apogee. It’s exceptionally well balanced with an incredibly long, palate saturating and harmonious finish with vivid energy and an elegant purity. WowWw. ☄️

Though not the same as it was pre-COVID -19, a handful of us were able to gather (while keeping our distance) to celebrate being back together and opened some fun wines to share. Wine is always better with good company.

The ‘04 has always been a favorite of mine, but this is really close. Aromatically, it is decadent and seductive. Sweet and ripe red, blue and black fruits dipped in fondue chocolate, with graham cracker and espresso, but also a charcoal/graphite like mineral note. It is silky on the palate with waves of more chocolate dipped fruits, nutmeg, Mexican vanilla and dust all wrapped in a rich profile that is still elegant and balanced. Gorgeous wine courtesy of

Tasmania Pinot Noir 2023

Tolpuddle Vineyard Pinot Noir 2023
Coal River Valley, Tasmania, Australia 🇦🇺

Overview
A thrilling first encounter with Tasmanian Pinot Noir, vivid, ultra-fresh, and beautifully lifted. This cool-climate expression leans into precision and energy rather than weight, delivering juicy purity without drifting into jamminess. Lightly chilled, it absolutely sang in the glass, showing how Tasmania is quietly carving out a serious identity for elegant, high-definition Pinot Noir.

Aromas & Flavors
Bright dark cherry, cola spice, and fresh red-black berry fruit lead the aromatics, layered with subtle floral lift and a hint of forest freshness. On the palate, juicy cherry, cranberry skin, and gentle baking spice glide effortlessly, keeping everything lively, transparent, and beautifully balanced without heaviness.

Mouthfeel
Light to medium-bodied with vibrant acidity and silky, flowing texture. Energetic, refreshing, and wonderfully agile, the wine literally dances across the palate, especially when served slightly chilled.

Food Pairings
Roast chicken or duck with herbs. Grilled salmon or tuna. Mushroom risotto or lentil dishes. Charcuterie boards with soft cheeses. Asian-inspired dishes with light soy or ginger notes.

Verdict
A joyful, eye-opening Pinot Noir that delivers freshness, precision, and pure drinkability. Not jammy, not heavy, just beautifully expressive cool-climate Pinot with real personality. A reminder that Tasmania deserves serious attention on the global Pinot stage.

Did You Know?
Coal River Valley is one of Tasmania’s coolest and driest wine regions, benefiting from long daylight hours, cool nights, and maritime influence, ideal conditions for preserving acidity, aromatics, and finesse in Pinot Noir. Commercial vineyard plantings here only began in the late 1980s, making it a young but rapidly rising region.

🍷 Personal Pick
This was pure discovery joy for me, lightly chilled, insanely fresh, and dangerously easy to love. Exactly the kind of wine that makes you rethink what Pinot can be outside the usual Burgundy and Oregon lanes.
