Château Saint Jean

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

Saint-Joseph Syrah 2020

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of 90min. The 2020 pours a deep ruby/purple color with an opaque core; medium+ viscosity with significant staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of powerful ripe dark and blue fruits: Marionberries, figs, purple flowers, bacon fat, black olives, rocky minerals and soft baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. Young, but this is another lovely vintage of Chave Saint-Joseph. Give it time. Best after 2030 and drink through 2040+. — a month ago

Domaine Dujac

Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2006

The 2006 Clos Saint-Denis pours a deep ruby color with a transparent core; medium viscosity with light staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with powerful notes of tart and ripe red and black fruits: raspberry, strawberry, black cherry, eastern spices, a touch herbal and nice minerals, almost like red and purple Flintstone vitamins. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium+ acid. While I can sort of understand the mixed opinions on this wine/vintage combo, I personally think this needs a lot more time. Secondary characteristics are still not really showing and the fruit and structure are still very much intact. And even in this early window, I thought this was baller alongside some absolute bangers…it just needs a lot more time. Concentrated. Desperately wanted to try this on Day 2. Drink with patience and through 2056. — 4 days ago

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1978

When 78 Ducru is on it’s an amazing example of aged Bordeaux but they’re incredibly inconsistent. This was a stunning bottle but two were corked before it. A perfect pairing with black truffle tagliatelle. — 13 days ago

Pierre Gonon

Saint-Joseph Syrah 2015

Amazing what Gonon can coerce out of these vines. Wine is alive, multilayered, dark fruit a bit of tar, incredible balance. By no way overpowering in a hot year. — 6 days ago

Château Meyney

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 1986

Flight 3 , wine 2. Medium ruby and garnet terracotta rim. Quite reticent at first but marked but a light cassis , blackcurrant note , some violet also . More menthol and cassis on the palate also . Quite good density and with good fruit , slightly medicinal hint on the finish. Pretty good overall and though rustic was well balanced . This I thought was the Duhart 82 , probably because of the density on the palate , however was wrong , yet again. — 8 days ago

Château Léoville Poyferré

Saint Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

Blend of 60% Cab Sauv, 35% Merlot, 3% Cab Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, deep Ruby with aromas of dark fruits, floral and spice. On the palate flavors of black cherry, currant and blueberry fruit with cigar box, cinnamon and floral notes. Lively acidity, elegant fine tannins, well balanced, long finish ending with slight earthy notes, plenty of depth, good now and will continue to develop. — 12 days ago

Think @Sipping Fine Wine got the note right, I would just add this had really incredible mouthfeel - the tannins were solid but very finely grained & integrated. Regal bearing, long life ahead - impressive QPR — 16 days ago

Château Lagrange

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (46%), Merlot (45%) and Petite Verdot (9%). Dark garnet/ruby color with a noticeable brick colored rim. Aromas of black fruit and berries, leather, rose petals and tobacco. Flavors of ripe black plums, black currant, black cherry, graphite and iodine. Long, earthy and softly textured finish that features a nice amount of oak. Well integrated and very soft tannins. Medium to medium-plus body. Still fresh and concentrated on it’s twentieth birthday. So easy to drink. Thanks for sharing this impressive bottle, Kase and Pete. — 10 days ago

Château Cos d'Estournel

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 1983

(Two previous 1983 wine reviews never made it on here, so copying from my CT).

Continuing a run of ‘83s over the last 3-6 months, this not only showed quite well, but it was at its best after almost two hours in the bottle. Whereas the ‘83 Pichon was clean and elegant, this was a bit more dense and powerful. Beautifully expressive aromatics of potpourri, espresso, fig and leather with a flavor profile mostly on the red/black fruit side of the spectrum. The mid-palate showed good weight and continued to bulk-up during the evening. Old cherry-tobacco note at the finish. Honestly, this drank like it was more early ‘90s than it was early ‘80s. Good.
