On my first trip out to Napa (2015), Jarvis was one of the favorites, and so we went back in 2016 and again in 2018. We go to Napa every year, and it’s one of the only wineries we have visited multiple times.

This was part of a retrospective on 2012 Napa cabs, alongside Shafer HSS, Scarecrow, Morlet CdV, Bryant DB4, Dominus, Pulido Walker Melanson, Kapscandy, Buccella Cuvee Katrina Eileen and others. Definitely the most restrained.

For some reason, I always get a streak of green peppercorn on all of the reds from Jarvis. It’s not off putting, just a signature of the winemaking. I’ve never found these wines to be overblown/high alcohol. They aren’t quite Bordeaux like, but they are clearly in between current Napa style and a restrained bridge to Bordeaux. This 2012 was true to the above. Aromatics here has green peppercorn, tar, underripe black fruits and a very fragrant potpourri note. Even after being open a few hours this was strong with zippy acidity surrounded by pepper crusted blackberries, mocha, black cherries and even some leather (not Brett driven, though). Blind, maybe someone takes this to left bank Bordeaux in a ripe vintage…but the kiss of sweetness is hard to take away from Napa. Wonderfully delicious and complex Cabernet starting to enter a great drinking window.

@Paul T- Huntington Beach : Someone brought a 2010 Araujo Eisele to the tasting and it ended up winning 😂 But between the 2012s, the Scarecrow and Buccella were favorites among the ripe Napa crowd, and the Bordeaux enthusiasts preferred the Jarvis (even over the Dominus and a 2012 Montelena, which I think was slightly flawed). The Scarecrow and Buccella have so much fruit that they are best enjoyed in the near term versus the Shafer HSS, Dominus, and others.

Jarvis has always been such a unique producer with its incredible underground facility and fascinating lineup of wines. Their Finch Hollow Chardonnays (this one and the Unfiltered version) are outrageously expensive, but they sure know how to deliver on flavor profile.

My notes here are actually quite similar to the 2015 I opened last year, but everything is a touch more restrained. Normally quite rich with expensive oak usage, this seems nicely balanced…it’s almost fresh in profile. Sweet lemon cream alongside marzipan and sea breeze aromatically. From a phenolic standpoint, it’s close to some of the Aubert offerings with its powerful texture. Finishes with a surprising amount of honeysuckle, caramel dipped apple, and honeycrisp. This seems to be built for a bit longer aging compared to the 2015. I’ll be curious to see how the 2018 is.

I’ve long been a fan of the Jarvis Finch Hollow Chardonnays (whether the regular or the unfiltered). They are expensive, but the type of wine when you open it ever so often, you are glad you have some. The unfiltered version is worth the extra $20.

I followed this over two days. Both days it sported such phenolic prowess that is enticing. If comparing, it’s in the same realm as an Aubert CIX based on phenolics and profile. Both days showed lemon cream, kiss of marzipan and honeyed sea salt aromatics but also a real bright tropical flair that I haven’t experienced before. The oak here provides some roundness on the palate, but the acidity is really complimentary. A friend, who is a white burg nut, said he’d blind this to burgundy all day long. This is more rich tropical fruit driven than previous ones that have been mostly caramel and baking spices. Delicious now, but I’d hold another 2-3yrs.

Napa Valley Merlot Cabernet Franc 2018

Dark bright deep purple. Cassis, saddle leather, touch of olive, dark ripe black fruit (plum, cherry, berry). Nice balance with noticeable acidity and just a touch of soft round tannin. I like the cab.franc/Merlot weight much better than Cabernet Sauvignon, Very good companion for frigid Chicsgo night with filets, double stuffed bakers, and balsamic sautéed zucchini. — 24 days ago
