Pessac Léognan, Graves

Château La Mission Haut-Brion

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 1955

Delectable Wine

The 1955 La Mission Haut-Brion is not only one of the best vintages ever made at the estate, but also represents one of the top five Bordeaux wines of the 20th century. This was my fourth bottle and to give it a perfect score was easy. Clear in color, it sports a bouquet that is unbelievably intense and yet refined, delivering a kaleidoscope of aromas: black fruit, crushed rock, freshly rolled tobacco and shaved black truffles (but not the aniseed note I noticed in previous examples). The palate is exquisitely poised, brimming over with tension and energy undimmed by the passing years, and symmetrical on the finish. Hints of blood orange linger tantalizingly on the aftertaste. You almost laugh at the unequivocal perfection. Tasted at the La Mission Haut-Brion dinner at Amuse Bouche in Hong Kong. (Neal Martin, Vinous, September 2021)

Château Smith Haut Lafitte

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 2003

A little funk on the nose that quickly blew off. Unreal that this was a 2003 because it presents much younger. Many many years ahead for that one. — 20 days ago

Château Haut-Brion

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 1950

It’s alive! Tertiary aromas of earth, leaf and red fruit compote. Amazing acid balance, vibrant red color with little bricking. Sweet, resolved tannins. Improves with aeration. Unicorn wine. — a day ago

Awesome! How long and what method used for aeration?

Used the Durand cork screw/fork for cork removal. Just your basic very slow decanting as the wine presented itself in good shape upon opening. Waited 10 mins, then poured. I prefer to watch the wine’s evolution over time. Sometimes theses wines pass too quickly in the decanter.

Château Haut-Bergey

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

Red current, cassis, pencil shavings, and licorice root. A little juicier than the bottle I had in 2019. 2005 has probably plateaued. But is likely good for another 10-15 years. — 14 days ago

Château Carbonnieux

Pessac-Léognan Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 2018

Love! Great taste but well with food - not too overpowering. A bit of acidity as it gets warmer. Peaches and floral on the nose (too floral when we first got it). Peaches and nutty on taste. — 25 days ago

All smiles because I’m lucky enough to have a friend introducing me to all these great wines that are outside my usual picks. Lovely one. Fresh tangerines. Nice acidity. — 11 days ago

Château Malartic-Lagravière

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 2018

2018 vintage. That sumptuous Graves nose of herbs and chocolate milk. Light medium body. Petite spell of astringency with paprika, zinc and orange peel in the finish currently but it dissolves after twelve seconds or so and the aforementioned herbs come back into play on a lingering, subtle denouement. — 21 days ago

Château Ferran

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 2017

2017 vintage. Dark and brooding, with cedar, graphite, blackberry, cocoa-dusted black cherry, dried sage. Medium-plus tannins, which are fine-grained and powdery feeling. Supposed to be a lot of Petit Verdot in this one, and it shows. — 15 days ago

Had exact vintage beginning of this month. Liked it a little more than you (9.3). Wouldn't mind squiring away 2-3 bottles for the "cellar."

I’d like to do the same @Scott Rose
