Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 1959

Tasted blind, from two combined bottles. Dark reddish amber rims with a more dark reddish tawny center. Obvious nose says we are in old world Bordeaux and brings smiles. Notes of black cherry, cigar box, dirt barn floor, gravel, tobacco leaf, old leather saddle. Long finish. The guesses focus on 40s/50s/60s Bordeaux. The experience is similar to a bottle of 59 Haut Brion I opened only a couple of weeks ago, so I am in Graves and the debate narrows to 59 vs 61. Would Stan open 2 bottles of 59 HB for the team? Yes he would! I go with the similarities I’m getting with my recent bottle of this and nail my guess. — 3 days ago

Massive hugely fruited nose. Dirt, Sous bois and minerals in the background. Massive mid season cherries. Some nice spice. Very clean and pure. Palate is juicy, ripe and has appealing dark red cherry and black cherry fruit. Lipsmacking acidity and freshness. One of the more brooding Les Vergelesses I’ve had. Really sappy but seems closed on the back end. Lovely length and persistence. Great texture and compactness. Massive fruit. More to come. — a month ago

Castellani La Cattura Toscana Teroldego Syrah 2016

Very Earthy. Tuscan Blend - Mostly Teroldego (normally found in Northern Italy) with some Syrah blended in. Beautifully aromatic. Cranberry, sour dark cherry and black currant fruit. Tobacco and black dirt notes. Reasonably low alcohol (12.5%) level and balanced acidity. Quite good. Outstanding QPR! — 3 months ago

Clear and bright garnet. Nose scared me at first being nothing but dirt. After opening up it gives black cherry, black cranberry, and forest floor (a.k.a., dirt). Medium light on the palate which echoes the nose. Medium plus acidity and sneaky medium tannins. A firm Burgundy-style Pinot Noir that’s a great match for high-end Old World fare or New World salmon, duck, or pork dishes. NV like so much from Champagne, so drink it (up to a year from) when you buy it. — a month ago

Trinidad Vineyard Grey [Glacier] Carménère 2017

This is a beautiful Carménère, all earthy and full of savory minerality. The blackberry and black plum aromas creep through the smell of that dirt with tar, forest floor and tobacco all over them. A hint of vanilla sweetens the sniff a bit. On the palate, the dark fruit is draped in sweet oak spice, and you’ll find a bucketful of tannins until the glass has been sitting for awhile. This is a steak wine, intended for a big, juicy piece of beef. — a month ago

John Sebastiano Vineyard Pinot Noir 2014

Not fully translucent. Good spice on the nose, black pepper, eucalyptus, menthol, and some prune hidden in the background. Tannins are lush and delicate with acidity pouring down the tip of the tongue. That eucalyptus and menthol combo hits upfront on the palate with rainbow peppercorn following. There’s blackberry there and a touch of dusty dry dirt. That’s about it...lacks a bit of depth. — 3 months ago
