2016 Beaujolais

Thibault Liger-Belair

Vieilles Vignes Moulin-à-Vent Gamay 2016

My first time trying the 2016 vintage. This bottle was opened about 90min before service. The wine pours a deep garnet, fading to magenta, with a watery rim. It has a slightly turbid appearance and a nearly opaque core with slight, staining of the tears. On the nose, holy whole cluster city Batman! This Moulin-à-Vent is not faking the funk on a nasty dunk. Notes of dark fruit, curry, cheese rind, wet asphalt, and minerals. Fabulous acid and medium+ tannin. The finish is long, lingering, and slightly green. I fell in love with Thibault’s wines from M-à-V with the 2010 vintage and I’ve been smitten ever since. They are among the most exciting wines made in the Cru today. In 3-5 years, these will really slap. — 15 days ago

Côte du Py Morgon Gamay 2016

One of the greats, always delicious that is developing nicely showing blackberry, raspberry, dark cherry jam with graphite, crushed rock, savory spices & violets. — a month ago

Terre Nere (Campigli Vallona)

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2016

Opened about an hour before service. The 2016 Terre Nere (Campigli Vallone) Brunello di Montalcino pours a deep garnet with a slightly brownish rim. No signs of sediment. On the nose, this is very expressive and unabashedly Italian with funky red and dark fruits, black tea, dried green herbs, licorice. On the palate, oh yes…the wine is bone dry with medium++ tannin and medium+ acid. The structure is stunning. There’s loads on character on the palate too with ripe and wisened cherries, orange curaçao, dry earth, and dried herbs. The finish is long and immensely satisfying. A killer wine with a long life ahead. Drink now with some patience and through 2036 — 3 days ago

Cayenne Fleurie Gamay 2016

Never before have I come across a wine with such an intense aroma of strawberries. Also raspberries and blossom in this featherweight delight. — 6 days ago

Domaine des Terres Dorées (Jean-Paul Brun)

Moulin-à-Vent Gamay 2016

Light ruby colour. Complex nose at first, Burgundian, dominated by raspberry, and white pepper, also evolved vegetal notes, ferrous, undergrowth, etc. many evocations but all in finesse. After two hours of aeration, the wine is finally in place and the finish finally unfolds between raspberry, pepper and undergrowth. Light but chewy. One of my favourite styles!

Needed a whole day to become civilized. Stunning nose of blueberry, blackberry, graphite, granite and dark flowers. Some saddle leather as well. Also wet pottery clay. Palate is juicy and concentrated with terrific energy and thrust. Sappy and fresh with such fine grained tannins. Terrific layering and a soft density. So pure and deep. Elegant like only the best can be. Amazing balance and length. Age for 5-7 more years then watch out! — 4 days ago

Mount Eden Vineyards

Estate Bottled Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay 2016

Absolutely an amazing wine! Thank you @Ron R for recommending this! I am experiencing so many elements at the same time. Reminisce of an aged Chenin Blanc where you get creaminess almost wax cheese rind and honey. Picking up an almond sticky bun. Not really acidity but unique freshness of lemon, peaches & yellow apples. Golden hay in color, Med+ body w/ nice long finish. Drinking this w/ a nice chill presents some nice acidity.
Hard not to make a comparison (sigh) to something I paid a lot more for and enjoyed...not so much! Love the balance and 13.5 alc.

Vice Versa

Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

This bottle of 2016 Vice Versa “Dr. Crane Vineyard” (BBS) was generously provided by a friend who selected it from his cellar to share over dinner at V. Mertz. This is the BBS (Best Barrel Select) of the Dr. Crane Vineyard which, I guess, is deemed the best tasting barrel by the winemaking team. Popped and poured. No formal notes but I can state with absolutely certainly that the juice is well and truly special. The wine is still quite youthful but already very easy to love. Beautifully layered dark fruits with tobacco, cocoa, stone-like minerals and deftly integrated baking spices. The structure is firm, leaving little doubt about the long life yet ahead. That being said, everything is so well balanced. I have a very strong feeling this will be one of those wines that never really shuts down. While they are two very different wines from different parts of the world, I found this to be a very handsome compliment to the 2015 “Tintot” we drank just before. This was also very nice with the lamb chops we had for dinner. Drink now or through 2036.
