Great value Marques de Caveres Rioja from the well received 2010 vintage. Full bodied and powerful this delicious wine delivers lots of dark berry, plum, pepper, leather and a subtle earthiness in the mouth. While the tannins are still ripe, it does seem balanced and should last another 5-7 years.

Great value classic Rioja. At 8 years old this wine is a deep ruby in the glass with a hint of dried dark fruit on the nose. The palate delivers developing, yet rustic dark fruit, vanilla, leather with a whiff of light smoke and wood. Decanted for one hour, it was nicely balanced and complex enough to keep for another 5-7 years or more.

Day 3: Heavy mushrooms framed by sage and cedar, with chamomile and pork fat. There is persimmon, nutmeg, dried grapes, tar, dark raisin bread, tobacco leaf, and poppy seed. This thing was an unwieldy wooden baton on Saturday night; a real leather daddy. It has since opened into a lumberjack in a leather tunic felling a large birch near a meadow of scorched wildflower. He’s sweating, and lightly peppered. Grilled apple, eel skin, dried black currant, dried roses, rawhide, marinated plum, and a tart persistence that is neither graphite, or smoke, but something similar with a dry-rubbed saline-sweetness in the mix. Delicious 2010 Baron De Ley Gran Reserva . Mainly Tempranillo (85%) with some Graciano, the grapes are from the small Cenicero vineyard located in Rioja Alta. Matured for 2 years in 50% French oak and 50% American oak, with a further 3 years in the bottle before release. On the palate it is full bodied, soft and smooth in a classic Rioja style. Dark fruit, tobacco, black pepper with mild balsamic notes. The acidity and tannins are well balanced and give a complex and long finish. Great wine at $29.
