There's something about it that reminds me of the taste of pine tree bark (I've eaten pine tree bark).

Mild rooty notes come side by side with plum, berry and cola aromas. This is deep, pure and elegant in the mouth, with ripe berry, spice and vanilla flavors doled out in proper amounts. A loamy finish with just enough acidic kick confirms the excellence of this gran reserva from a classic vintage. Drink through 2018. — 4 years ago
Great example from the excellent 2005 harvest. A blend of 85% Tempranillo / 15% Graciano, this wine spent 36 months in oak and another 36 months in bottle before release. A deep ruby in the glass, it delivers lots of dark red fruit, with layers of spice, leather, vanilla, tobacco and earthiness. The maturity time of this Gran Reserva delivers a beautiful, smoothly balanced wine. Decanted for 1 hour, this will easily last another 10-15 years.

Delicious 2010 Baron De Ley Gran Reserva . Mainly Tempranillo (85%) with some Graciano, the grapes are from the small Cenicero vineyard located in Rioja Alta. Matured for 2 years in 50% French oak and 50% American oak, with a further 3 years in the bottle before release. On the palate it is full bodied, soft and smooth in a classic Rioja style. Dark fruit, tobacco, black pepper with mild balsamic notes. The acidity and tannins are well balanced and give a complex and long finish. Great wine at $29.

Picked up this precocious tweening vintage at the local QFC, cuz I'm a sucker for Tempranillo and doubly a sucker for an older Rioja. Campo Viejo is one of the major producers of Rioja, and can be found virtually anywhere wine is sold. You can think of Rioja as Spain's Bordeaux or California's Meritage - if not 100% Tempranillo, it's typically a blend of Tempranillo (typically the major grape), Garnacha (Grenache), Graciano, and Mazuelo (Carignan). The gran reserva designation is reserved for vintages that were aged for a minimum of 5 years, two of which must be in oak. Due to the amount of time to market, gran reserva bottling occurs with only the best harvests. Paired this bottle with a Sicilian cauliflower pizza with fresh mozzarella and oregano. Delish - and still drinking wonderfully, probably for another 3-5 years! ~$22 | #campoviejo #granreserva #rioja
