The Figgins Estate Vineyard is a high elevation site in the Walla Walla Valley, planted to Bordeaux varietals. The Estate Proprietary Red utilizes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot and was aged for 22 months in largely new French oak prior to bottling. Needing more than an hour decant, the wine slowly releases bright red cherry, dill, sandalwood, and black tea aromatics that build in the glass. The palate is silky smooth, delivering a nice combination of red and dark fruits with black tea, anise and smoky undertones shining through as well. The 2014 'Foothills Reserve' is an absolutely incredible Syrah that shows tremendous promise for this acclaimed vintage. This inky colored, opaque wine begins with intoxicating aromatics of red cherries and blackberries woven together with Unami, wet stones, white pepper and smoked brisket all taking shape in this majestic red. On the palate this demonstrates deep layers of concentrated flavors with Mandarin orange rind, red cherry, red raspberry, creosote and seaweed notes all leaving an impression. The 2016 Delmas Syrah is a head-turning wine that takes its seat at the high table in Washington Syrah. Sourced from the highly acclaimed SJR Vineyard, the Syrah is connected with 7.25% Viognier in the co-ferment and saw limited new oak prior to bottling. This instantly impressess as it exudes heady aromas of red currant jelly, cigar ash, blood orange rind, barn floor, crushed wet gravel and Asian spices which all come together beautifully and continue to bring you back to the glass for more. On the palate this silky, smooth and seductive red is well balanced and laced with flavors of cranberries, pomegranate, Mandarin orange, red cherry candy, peat moss and Umami. This has incredible range, precision, purity and focus from start to finish. The 2017 Figgins Family Wines Riesling is a fantastic bottling from winemaker Chris Figgins. and is truly one of the best of its kind in the state. Showing off a golden hue, this begins with lovely petrol aromatics along with white flowers, honeydew melon and candied pineapple coming through in the glass. On the palate this delivers vibrant minerality backed by flavors of white peach, lemongrass, roasted pineapple and hints of smoky undertones which complete this complex and delicious Riesling. The 2013 ‘Memory Found’ Syrah is a head-turning and seductive release from the incredibly talented winemaker, Matt Reynvaan. On the nose this shows massive range, from Hoisin sauce to peat moss to wet stone and citrus rind to brandied dark cherries all taking shape beautifully in the glass. Despite its age and the heat of the vintage, this is lithe and youthful, showing a wonderful combination of tension and purity. Flavors of pipe tobacco, chocolate covered dark cherries, roasted figs, wet stones, blood orange zest and umami all marvelously combine. The salinity of the wine also adds wonderful appeal, as this shows remarkable complexity and range, through the finish. Overall, this is a stunning Syrah that will be best enjoyed within the next five to ten years. — 5 days ago
The 2012 Cayuse 'God Only Knows' Grenache is an ethereal wine by this estate. This incredible wine possesses classic Walla Walla mineral characteristics on the nose, along with ripe red cherries, raspberries, sage, rose petals, lavender, and blood orange all coming together beautifullt. On the palate the range of flavors at play is tremendous as it developing enticing flavors of raspberry, Unmami, Shitake mushroom, crushed wet rock, boysenberry, pomegranate seed and crushed white wildflowers. The structure of the wine makes it nearly impossible to resist as everything expands seamlessly on to the ultra-long finish, which is absolutely astonishing. This Grenache becomes even more rich and aromatically present following extended air contact. The oldest Cayuse I’ve had thanks to @Steve Anderson and an interesting comparison to what I’m used to from this house. The nose had none of the fox fur funk that I’m conditioned to expect; likewise no black olive tapenade in the taste profile. That being said, I thought it showed really well. Depth, balance and still some marked residual power. A fun chance to see what Cayuse is at age 20. — 2 months ago
This is just a stunning 2010 Syrah from Matt Reynvaan. This Syrah has 6% Marsanne blended in and is sourced from the Reynvaan's esteemed 'In The Rocks' Vineyard. This wine improves following more than one hour of air before enjoying. As this begins to unwind, it releases intense aromatics of red with smoked meats, Umami, crushed wet stone and dried herbs de Provence. The mid-palate shows off a seamless texture, with bright fruit flavors of pomegranate, wild blackberry cordial,orange rind, red cherry preserves and lighter suggestions of wet stone continue on through the exceedingly long finish. The elegance of this wine is already apparent, and I expect this wonderful Syrah will age gracefully into the next decade and beyond. Drink 2019-2033- 95 — 4 days ago
The 2008 ‘En Chamberlin’ is simply marvelous right now. The wine shows aromatic profile of seaweed, Umami, horse manure, wet stone, mandarin orange rind and wild blackberry, the intoxicating bouquet brings you back to the glass for more. There are ripe flavors of smoke, brisket, Umami, black olive, boysenberry pie, smoked brisket and light suggestions of coffee grounds. The texture of this wine borders ethereal, as this is translucent, yet fat on the mid-palate. This shows a wonderful combination of fruit and terroir from this warm vintage in Washington.
