Victoria Johanna

Sunbury Shiraz 2012

See previous note in June 2023 where I questioned the ripeness of the fruit. This has the trademark spice and pepper. Very little fruit, more savoury characters. From one of Australia’s leading cool climate wineries. As Jancis said, “a real sense of place “ - in this case the Macedon Ranges just north of Tullamarine Airport. Very different to SA Shiraz. Just medium bodied - a leathery note with balanced tannins. As in previous note a touch of astringency at the finish. — 41 minutes ago

Giant Steps

Applejack Vineyard Pinot Noir 2016

See previous notes 20 weeks ago and 79 weeks ago. My last bottle of the 2016 GS Applejack Pinot Noir. The pale colour belies the strength of the palate. Quite delicious in fact. . Applejack Vineyard probably my favourite of the Giant Steps Cuvées. Red fruited - succulent savoury red cherry. — 16 days ago

@Bob McDonald thanks for the rec: had a lovely tasting there! We tasted through all the 22 PNs. For another data point: my wife and I both preferred the Wombat to the Applejack. Our favorite PN of the tasting was the Tasmanian Fatal Shore!

@Aravind A I can’t disagree with your preference for The Fatal Shore. Under the new ownership of the Jackson Family the style may change a little from the fabulous winemaking of Steve Flamsteed. My recollection of the Wombat Creek was perhaps the use of more whole bunch in the ferment. They are all very good.

Nocton Vineyard is also great.

William Downie

Gippsland Pinot Noir 2021

Currently about 5 hours east of Melbourne in east Gippsland tasting this brilliant William Downie Pinot Noir. See several previous Delectable notes from earlier vintages. This wine manages to combine light to medium weight with medium plus intensity. Red fruited with Sous Bois. Downie is a gifted winemaker working in an excellent terroir for Pinot Noir. Would like to have more access to his wines up in Queensland. — 4 months ago

Gorgeous. So elegant and powerful. Needed a decant to blow off some reduction but that was ok. Stunning! Beautiful wine. — 4 months ago

@Ron R well I’m a believer now! Surprised my top two were Aussie vs Cote Roties and US syrahs…
