Giant Steps
Applejack Vineyard Pinot Noir
Black Plummy aromatics along with whole bunch aromas. On the palate fleshy with resolved Tannins and beautiful balance - everything coming together - at its peak. From one of Australia’s better and awarded winemakers in Steve Flamsteed. A wonderful Yarra Valley Pinot - my last of the 2013s from Applejack Vineyard.

Aug 12th, 2019Some stalky whole bunch nettle like aromas mixed in with the cherries and plums. Oak in the background. Great QPR. Excellent Pinot Noir. Had another bottle on 16th November 2018 50 weeks after this note and 212 weeks after original note. Toffee notes on opening with some stalks. Light to medium weight. Drink last 2 bottles in next year or so.

Nov 28th, 2017Some stalky whole bunch aromas with cherries. Fresh and bright. Medium weight and delicious. The usual high standard from Giant Steps and a regular annual purchase for me.

May 7th, 2017Macerated cherries, pomegranate and blood orange fruits make a big first impression, but there's so much more; layers of earth, smoke, game and savoury spice reveal a seriously complex wine. This is truly a benchmark Yarra Valley Pinot.

Feb 3rd, 2016The previous vintage won best Pinot at the Melb wine show RNA. Should have won the Jimmy Watson won by another Pinot. Fresh bright fruit nose - cherries, some pepper/spices, rose perfume. Medium weight, silky. Delicious. 17.5+.

Oct 18th, 2014Destroyed this with pan seared duck breast in cherry sauce — random midweek home-cooked dinner — and it was delicious. Beautifully balanced, still with plenty of red fruit underlined by some cola and darker cherry. Seems to have a lot of life ahead of it. Could drink this all night.

Jun 13th, 2019Not as bright and fruit forward as others indicate. PnP so maybe that’s the issue. Will revisit on night 2. More elegant but fairly muted. Night two doesn’t change. Fruit is there but very faint. Nothing technically wrong, just not as fruit forward as I would expect from Oz.

Jun 23rd, 2018This #vrtisatlasofwine features a tasty number from Yarra Valley. Wild forest berries, blood orange, star anis, mossy tree bark, smoldering pine wood. The palate is dense, chewy, rich, and full. What's lacking in elegance is made up for in trademark sensuality.
