Descendientes de José Palacios

Pétalos Bierzo Mencía 2020

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of a couple of hours. The 2020 “Pétalos” pours a deep purple color with a magenta rim and an opaque core; medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with ripe and tart black fruits: blackberries, black cherry, salmiakki, horse blanket, and mixed earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium. A crazy, ambitious wine that’s the result of assembling over 300 plots. Between Raúl Perez and Palacios, Mencia doesn’t get much better. Drink now through 2030. — 10 days ago

Clio Jumilla Monastrell-Cabernet Sauvignon Blend

Interesting. A little young, dumb, and full of fun. Some residual sugar on the front. But clearly nice fruit.

Viña Tondonia Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2010

Medium garnet , quite pronounced terracotta , garnet rim . This is more closed on the nose , slightly darker , less fruited , more tobacco , earthy , iodine , mineral, dry spices . On the palate more intensity with fresher acidity and grippy tannin . Darker fruits , with cherry , blackcurrant , but with a strong seaside , oyster shell componente . Good length and very elegant , slightly tannic finish . This is quite serious and restrained, more complete and complex than the 2011. Needs a bit of time to open, probably better in a 3-5 years and will show well for a further 5-10. From magnum . — 23 days ago

Imperial Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2019

Rarely drink rioja but this was nice, especially paired with a large ribeye at a Spanish restaurant. Good fruit and dusty earth, quite round, maybe lacking a bit of acid for my taste but still nice. — 7 days ago

Rías Baixas Albariño 2023

A wine from Jorge Ordóñez and his winemaking team. Pale lemon color with crisp stone fruit and citrus aromas. On the palate flavors of apple, pear and melon with lemon citrus, consistent offering from La Cana. Medium finish ending with fruit, spice and mineral tang. Nice value. — 25 days ago

One of my go to producers of Tempranillo. Still a bit early on their 2016, but showed shades of their excellent 2010 I had about 8-9 months ago.
