Henschke

Cyril Henschke Eden Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1986

100% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged 1 year in new French and American oak barrels, while I get the Barossa fruit feel, this also reminds, at this age, of 1980s Napa/Sonoma Cabs, close to mature, very well-balanced, complex, long, lingering finish, terrific Barossa Cabernet!! Purchased at Henschke in 1989 (my first and only visit) and shipped home via a now-defunct import/shipping company in Alameda, California (I also bought some 1986 Mt. Edelstone Shiraz and 1985 Hill of Grace Shiraz on that same trip!!) — 3 months ago

@Bob McDonald, I have had both, I might have 1 bottle of each left, though due to consolidation of wines in random boxes I can’t be sure — finding this Cab was a fluke. But I hope I do find the two Shiraz (I think I originally bought 6 each HoG and Cab, and 12 MtE).

@Bob McDonald, I don’t know if you can see my Taste Insights in Delectable, but if you can, check under Shiraz-South Australia — I checked in the 1986 Mt. Edelstone about 8 1/3 years ago and thought it was almost perfect (9.9, same as 1977 Grange), so I must have consumed a 1985 HoG before joining Delectable.

Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon 1978

Deep fruit. A touch of tang. Some tobacco and dried herbs. Iron and deep fruit. So young given its age. Quite intense. Soulful. Excellent — 3 months ago

Henschke

Mount Edelstone Vineyard Shiraz 2013

Mount Edelstone is Stephen’s favourite Henschke vineyard - planted in 1912 by Colin Angas and sold to Cyril Henschke in 1974. I have 7 vintages of Mt Edelstone in my home cellar but somehow missed the 2013 so I bought a bottle -released from the Henschke museum. This was absolutely delicious and early in its drinking window is to 2045+. Chosen for the masterclass to taste beside the current release 2019 as they were both from drought years. A beautiful fragrant perfume. Black pepper, sage, spice and plum pudding. First released at 6 years of age. A brilliant wine. Particularly loved by my wife Barb. — 7 months ago

Hill of Grace Keyneton Vineyard Shiraz 2019

This is the current release of Hill of Grace, the 2019, priced at $975AUD and incredibly Sold Out according to the website. Matched with the 2008 as both were from hot years. Initially a sooty, minerally earthy note on the nose. Then came Satuma Plum, blackberry, spice and pepper. Stephen said only 25% to 30% of the normal volume for sale. (Hence the Sold Out). He let us in on a secret that there will be no 2020 released. I asked if the fruit is used in another Cuvée. The answer is No - the grapes are removed and thrown out. Seems a waste. He went on to explain that H of G has a different spice character to Edelstone - more of an Asian spice. Mostly used oak is used to lessen the oak influence. Elegant yet intense and without a doubt one of the world’s great wines. Will live for decades. — 7 months ago
