Of all the American red wines that participated in the Judgement of Paris, it could be argued that Monte Bello has shown the greatest propensity to age. In fact, I would go as far as it requires lengthy cellaring to extract its best. I’ve had the good fortune to drink a number of tremendous vintages of Monte Bello over the last several years and this one has got to be at or near the top of the lot.

Opened and poured into a decanter about an hour prior to service and enjoyed over the course of a few hours. The 1991 Monte Bello pours a deep ruby/purple color with an opaque core moving out towards a light ruby rim; medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears and some signs of sediment. On the nose, the wine is developing (still!) with gorgeous notes of ripe and tart black currants, mixed bramble fruit, tobacco, some purple flowers, dill, mint, leather, earth, vanilla and associated baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. The structure remains tremendous which again, seems to indicate youth. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is super long and immensely satisfying. This is one of those wines that will outlive most humans. Drinking well now with a short decant but this has the gas to see 2061 with ease. — 25 days ago

Hmm. 🤔 wasn’t able to connect with this, expectingly great wine. Actually first direct out of the bottle it was promising. Strong oak notes with vibrant dark red fruit underneath it. But over the next hour, the oak flavors started to be integrated more but the acidity became very prominent and made the wine rather single note, diluted, lacking depth, acidic tasting. So needless to say. Disappointing experience. Maybe it was not the right day 🤔. — 7 months ago

No formal notes . Quite dense ruby . Quite high toned floral character on the nose, very different from all others so far , this had to be the Petrus . More purple fruits , spicy . Spicy and rounded and quite exotic in character . On the palate this shows a juicy note and a rounder , richer riper tannin . Quite round on the finish , but ok generous finish . Floral and charming . This certainly showed exuberance and youthful , though it is also quite elegant and relatively fine boned in style. This can be drunk now and over the next 10 perhaps 15 years — 12 days ago

So strong and pristine. This bottle hasn’t moved since bottled. Totally thrilled with this beauty. Intense notes of coffee and mature cherries on the nose. Tannins are robust, coupled with pure maple and zippy acidity. Stand out with zero hints of aging. — 7 months ago

2018 vintage. Decanted and tasted after 15 mins and one hour. Beautifully feminine and expressive nose leapt out of the decanter. Medium body. Nice balance of dark fruits and tannins but slightly disjointed. A wonderfully balanced Cabinet blend from Bolgheri. Definitely Cabernet notes but so balanced that nothing stands out. Sassicaia is definitely Bordeaux First or Second Growth standard. Understated but irresistible nonetheless. 85% Cabernet Sauvignon; 15% Cabernet Franc. Probably one of the best non Bordeaux Cabernet blends. — 2 months ago

Birthday year wine for me. So far, I’ve aged better than this bottle but it’s close! The ‘88 is slightly past its prime but still worth tasting. In the garden of earthly delights - dried figs, plums, dates, and mushrooms. Some peat and chocolate. Plenty of spice. Very fun. Happy birthday to me! — 6 months ago

Very nice tonight with a pork schnitzel and excited to see how this develops. Opened 10 hours before dinner and decanted for 3 hours. I do think the air helped everything even out a bit. Nice restrained fruit, good linear core of minerality and acid, decently fresh with still some ever so slightly funky earth on the finish. — 9 months ago
