Peter Franus

Brandlin Vineyard Zinfandel 2016

I don’t know why so many Zin producers these days (not this one) grow and make Zin so that it ends up over 15% AND has residual sugar. This wine does it right. It reflects the stony mountain vineyard it’s grown in very well. Closed at first. After 45 minutes, nose has pure black raspberry fruit, tons of cracked stone minerality, and little leathery, brambly thing, and just a touch of maple syrup. Mouthfilling but bone dry, nice structure to the palate. Really, really good. — 11 days ago

North Canterbury Sauvignon Blanc

Enjoyed this NZ sauvignon blanc. It’s exactly what you’d expect from the region-lots of mineralogy, lime zest, pear, bold and fairly acidic. Picked this up for fairly cheap ($10-15) at Costco. Especially for the price it’s a great wine. — 4 days ago

Mt. Veeder Chardonnay 2018

Tried several bottles, my new Favorite white, just love mountain fruit! Named for mountain range dividing Napa & Sonoma, old stone winery dug into side of dormant volcano crater in 1889, remained in production ever since. Pale lemon with aromas of Tropical and stone fruit with complex spice and blossom notes. On the palate apple, pear and citrus zest flavors with light oak and honey tones, fresh and vibrant, well integrated. Long finish ending with flinty mineral characteristics. Long aging potential. Nice! — 14 days ago

Mt Veeder fruit showing so well. And super reasonable QPR which I never thought I would say for a Napa Cab! — 16 days ago

The Lion Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

This wine pairs perfectly with a ribeye especially right after you just ate a nice juicy piece. It’s a bit in the dry side but it has a big berry flavor with some, I think, espresso flavor when it’s still a bit cool. That changes over to a chocolate flavor on your cheeks but also seemed to slip away after it warmed up further. The berry flavor lingers in your mouth along with the dry finish so that’s nicer than most dry wines. Overall it has a lot of depth and is pretty fun to taste. Since it was $150 and a dry wine, I tended to rate it a bit down since I’m not into dry wines and probably better wines for less. I rate it a A-/B+ because of the above. — 17 days ago

Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

It's time for my #FridayCabernetfix.
Here is a delicious Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley.

Inky in color with a short reddish rim.

On the nose blackberries, blueberries, cooked cherries, licorice, cedar, light vanilla, earth, light bell pepper, spices, celery, tobacco, dark chocolates, coffee, vegetables, light alcohol, peppercorn and pencil lead.

Full bodied with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry and fruity on the palate with blackberries, black currants, plums, cooked cherries, cedar, leather, chocolates, tobacco leaf, licorice, graphite, peppercorn, vanilla, cola and light vegetables.

Long finish with round tannins and tangy cherries.

This is a wonderful Cabernet Sauvignon from Mount Veeder in Napa Valley. Nicely balanced with a great mouthfeel. Showing nice complexity on the nose and palate.

Still very young, but already enjoyable even by itself. Showing a little bit of alcohol, which would phase out with bottle time.

Good by itself or with food. Rich, opulent, fruit forward and ripe.

Needs time to open up, it took 2 hours to bring out the tannins and the complexity. As it opens up earth and vegetable notes show up and make it more interesting. Delicious once it opens up.

A good quality wine with good potential to become 95+ point wine. Will age nicely in the next 10 to 15 years.

I paired it with cheeses, but will pair very nicely with a big piece of steak.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were aged in French Oak barrels (40% new) for 26 months. A very tiny production of only five barrels.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

$105.

Have wanted to try this for a while and it didn't disappoint. Very smooth and elegant but perhaps a little muted. Would buy again and am excited to try others in their range. — 10 days ago
