Medium ruby with little cherry red flecks. Distinctively Stags Leap with notes of fresh cut violets, red cherries, and leather upfront. Some baking spice and deep dark chocolate, as well. First things first, this is way too young to open. You’re looking at around another decade before you have to start worrying but it’s still promising and pleasant right now. As huge and typical as it threatens to be, it never goes off the deep end. It retains that smoothness and lack of blinding acidity that so many other big Napa Cabs live and die by. Even at this age, it’s an approachable Cab with an hour of decanting. On the palate there’s plenty of nutmeg, dried red cherry, and blackberries. Menthol, vanilla cream, and more leather shine here. Hold this if you can but it’s still really nice right now. — 16 days ago
Medium bodied, smooth and not too much tannins, easy to drink. — 11 days ago
I’m a noob to Santa Cruz pinots, and looking forward to exploring the appellation in time.
PnP at cellar temp. Very light in color and body, true to its 12% abv. Nose is immediately intense and complex. Freshly baked cherry pie, sweet baking spices, botanicals, just-lighted bonfire, wet forest floor, soy sauce, and a catch all of funk. Palette is tense at this age, striking in the front and lifted in the mid. The finish lingers to infinity like a sherry would. Beautiful and very Burgundian. But an unusual bedfellow to tonight’s dinner of frozen pizza 🙃. — a month ago
Wow - this is phenomenal for the money. Wine has a lot of power but has the acidity and finesse as well. Loads of tannin and pencil shavings at first but finishes with dark fruit — 3 days ago
Nose is the best peach ever. Almost mesmerizing.
Palate is almost peach nectar. Almost a slightly thick texture. Some peach skin. Delicious. Good vivacity.
After a week open in the fridge this is nectar. Nose is gorgeous. Honey perfume. Palate is peach nectar. Finish is gods fresh peach.
So I’d let this sit 5 years.
This got NO stars. And it’s going to be brilliant in 5 years. Wow. Huhnerberg is one of the greatest vineyards in the world.
