Mistakable for Barolo, floral, ripe fruit but light/medium bodied, acidic, very approachable

Roagna

La Pira Barolo Nebbiolo 2017

More muscular than the Gallina (rightfully so!), but in no way lacking finesse. Concentrated with assertive tannins, yet so lithe and pure. On the nose, roses, incense, cherries, strawberries, eucalyptus, juniper, leather, and a touch of tar. With air, the fruits came to the forefront, popping out with such clarity. On the palate, the young Barolo tannins did seem to dominate, but under it was a really fine red fruit character that gave it such a lovely drinkability. Some minerality in the lengthy finish, though not quite as palpable as on the Gallina. WOTN for all on the table. Compared to the Gallina, I can’t quite say one was better than the other - just different Roagna interpretations of Nebbiolo. — 2 years ago

This has more edge than the Gallina, but kept opening up so beautifully. Started leather and herbaceous, finished ripe fruits and vanilla — 3 years ago

Pian Cavallo Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2017

Lyle Fass
9.2

Nose is smokey, tarry and reserved initially. Nice spices. Some tea. But seems like it’s about to bust open in 30 minutes or so. Chestnut. Some mid season cherry and minerality develops. It’s getting floral now. Palate is juicy, ripe and dense with great freshness and expressive mineralIty. Concentrated and really complex. Worlds better than the Gallina. Needs maybe one hour open but terrific energy, density and freshness. Long as well. Balanced. Substantial tannins but velvety and just barely sweet. — 6 years ago

Roagna

Gallina Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2017

First time trying wine from this Roagna vineyard and I’m smitten. Such a filigreed Nebbiolo and it was surprisingly open from the get-go. Perfumed, pure, and just brimming with nervy, stony energy. On the nose, it was a blast of roses, cherries, strawberries, crushed stones, and menthol, along with traces of rosemary and tar. Just so juicy, silky, and mineral on the palate. It felt delicate on a Nebbiolo-scale, but there was this forceful nature that was absolutely captivating. — 2 years ago

Still juvenile this Barbaresco. Paired with perfectly cooked steak with redwine sauce. Loads of fruit, leather and cocoa in the wine. Subtle! — 6 years ago

Cantina del Pino

Gallina Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2021

The color of the Cantina del Pino “Gallina” Barbaresco, swear it, is “ruby squared”. While initially the nose was surprisingly muted, a quick decant seemed to turn the key to much greater depth. Stewed red fruits lead to a ‘growingly’ remarkable palate of bot power as well as finesse. While the tannins are obvious, evident, and young- it seems with every minute that goes by it relaxes. While doing so, revealing layer after layer of evolution and new experience. Like a lot of other Barbarescos: please be patient. Doing so will only reward you. — 6 months ago

Vieilles Vignes Morgon Gamay 2020

Catching up on my notes. This was much better than the last bottle. Enjoyable, but it was crazy that this Gamay felt heavier than the Nebbiolo on the table. In its defense, it was up against Luca Roagna’s deft touch (see my notes on the 17’ Gallina). Despite its hefty structure, the Thevenet Morgon still had plenty of energy. Whole cluster goodness and plenty of red cherries. The palate was full-bodied with a supple texture. It had a touch of candied “sweetness” but plenty of acidity to keep things lively. Finished spicy with suggestions of minerality. One to revisit on a better occasion. — 2 years ago
