Vieilles Vignes Morgon Gamay 2020

Catching up on my notes. This was much better than the last bottle. Enjoyable, but it was crazy that this Gamay felt heavier than the Nebbiolo on the table. In its defense, it was up against Luca Roagna’s deft touch (see my notes on the 17’ Gallina). Despite its hefty structure, the Thevenet Morgon still had plenty of energy. Whole cluster goodness and plenty of red cherries. The palate was full-bodied with a supple texture. It had a touch of candied “sweetness” but plenty of acidity to keep things lively. Finished spicy with suggestions of minerality. One to revisit on a better occasion. — a year ago

Ikigall A Wine Worth Living Xarel.lo Blend 2022

Notes of green pear and crisp green apple. A bit thin, so won't hold up to heavy food, but okay by itself. — 2 years ago

Castello di Neive

Gallina Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2020

Licorice, tiny hint of Jolly Rancher watermelon, oak paneled steakhouses, cigar smoke filled libraries, wood burning stoves. Having with steak and potatoes. One of my favs. — 7 months ago

Roagna

Gallina Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2017

First time trying wine from this Roagna vineyard and I’m smitten. Such a filigreed Nebbiolo and it was surprisingly open from the get-go. Perfumed, pure, and just brimming with nervy, stony energy. On the nose, it was a blast of roses, cherries, strawberries, crushed stones, and menthol, along with traces of rosemary and tar. Just so juicy, silky, and mineral on the palate. It felt delicate on a Nebbiolo-scale, but there was this forceful nature that was absolutely captivating. — a year ago

Vürsù Vigneto Valeirano Riserva Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2011

This has more edge than the Gallina, but kept opening up so beautifully. Started leather and herbaceous, finished ripe fruits and vanilla — 2 years ago

Roagna

La Pira Barolo Nebbiolo 2017

More muscular than the Gallina (rightfully so!), but in no way lacking finesse. Concentrated with assertive tannins, yet so lithe and pure. On the nose, roses, incense, cherries, strawberries, eucalyptus, juniper, leather, and a touch of tar. With air, the fruits came to the forefront, popping out with such clarity. On the palate, the young Barolo tannins did seem to dominate, but under it was a really fine red fruit character that gave it such a lovely drinkability. Some minerality in the lengthy finish, though not quite as palpable as on the Gallina. WOTN for all on the table. Compared to the Gallina, I can’t quite say one was better than the other - just different Roagna interpretations of Nebbiolo. — 8 months ago
