Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Tough to justify the price tag. Literally had this next to a Kirkland Stags Leap Cab and it wasn’t that much better. Nose held much more intrigue, but flat and uninteresting on the palate. — 25 days ago

Domaine Joblot

L'Empreinte Givry 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2016

The 2016 L'Empreinte is the debut cuvée of Joblot's blended Givry premier crus. Wearied by all my bitter experience with buying wines in Malaysia, you can imagine my relief when it poured out bright and purple, and the smell of crushed cassis and spice wafted out of the bottle. In the glass, the nose adds intrigue with smokey, meaty aromas and a nice acetic lift. The wine is velvety, ripe and concentrated on the palate, framed by rather obvious wood still, with chewy tannins and lively acids. Finishes with medium length, dominated by plums and earth. Although it doesn't quite hit the spot for me, this was a solid pinot noir especially after a good number of weeks dry. Excellent value for those who like their Burgundy a little less subtle. — a month ago

Alban Vineyard Roussanne 1993

An experience wine to know, love and appreciate the history and genius of Bob Lindquist in birthing Santa Barbara/Central Coast as one of the great wine regions of the world. Here is proof. At 22 years young, a revelation in ageable Rousanne From Alban vineyard. Reduced with some matchstick, the fruit is mostly cider apples, but the long oak toast and yeasty, buttery golden color and honeyed deliciousness make this a wine to remember. Most will dismiss it as lightly oxidized, nutty or flat. But, there is charm and intrigue and the right pairing will entrance those who love wines from Jurancon and appreciate aged whites.
Glad I have more to share in the years to come.

Reserve Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Hmmm. Not sure what to think. Just an all around nice wine but nothing too special. Quite spicy, peppery notes, well integrated tannins. Nothing too oaky (always a concern with Napa Valley wines) but lacking depth and intrigue. — 19 days ago

Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Apparently it’s International Cabernet Day. Or perhaps it was on Aug 30. The world can’t seem to agree on this one. Nevertheless, this is exactly the cabernet I felt like drinking tonight. Young enough to be vibrant, with just enough time in bottle to create some intrigue. It’s concentrated and luscious with a dusty cocoa thread. The nose tends towards savoury with some nutty, woody and fragrant leafy notes, while the palate offers elegant black fruits, some herbaceousness and a little menthol. Rather delightful. — 2 months ago

Marchesi Antinori

Tignanello Toscana Super Tuscan Blend 2016

Full bodied intense wine that started out fantastic but petered our too quickly. Still giving it a good score for how it started out with dark cherry , forest floor and well integrated tobacco tannin providing intrigue and depth. After two hours it became very herbal and a bit flat. — 4 months ago

Domaine des Roches Neuves (Thierry Germain)

L'Échelier Saumur Chenin Blanc 2018

Lyle Fass

Electric. So so electric. Floral, stones, minerals, some light white almond slices, wet rocks, so stoney. But pure and chiseled. Palate is terrific. Dense, chewy and my god the acid on this is majestic. Nimble and pure with such purity and length. Lemons are pretty much the only fruit but the minerals crush you. So elegant and textured, yet dynamic and massive. Really a wine of contrasts wherein the intrigue lies. What aromas. Best Roches Neuves white since 13 Clos Romans but this might be better. Thierry has always said ultimately this wine would be better than Clos Romans when the vines got old enough. I think 18 is first vintage where this is true. An unreal wine. — 23 days ago

Verdicchio di Matelica 2019

Delectable Wine

Honied florals, crisp yellow apple and hints of citrus set the stage for soothing textures that balance ripeness of fruit against stimulating mineral tones. A sweet-and-sour sensation creates further intrigue, as well as lending a drink-me-now persona to the wine. $18.00 (Eric Guido, Vinous, August 2020) — 2 months ago

Weingut Keller

Abts E de Riesling 2017

This bottle looked a little suspect when I first opened it. It just didn't have that anticipated tightness in the nose - lacks the residual flint scents from spontaneous fermentation. Feeling a little disappointed, especially after my previous experience with this batch of bottles (see the last time I had this), I decided I wouldn't even taste it and let the wine air until lunch some 4 hours later. Lo and behold, the wine decided it would sing. Powerful aromas of pineapple, lemon, and herbs. Dig deeper and you can sense the floral and stony elements. There's a certain warmth to the nose, which in a way rang some alarm bells on bottle condition (the 17' Abtserde also typically leads with stone and chalk characters), but it does provide for some intrigue. The palate is explosive, with incredible intensity and depth; and to quote a friend, "all held together by rapier-like acidity and palpable phenolic texture". Endless finish. A stunning wine, despite my postulation that this isn't an pristine bottle. — 3 months ago

@romo I'm kinda biased too, but it certainly wasn't bad - just not "right" in my eyes. Happy that others on the table loved it 😁

It’s unfortunate that you so frequently have to deal with heat-compromised wines!
