Grappa Di Brunello

Il Marroneto

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2001

Opened a few hours prior to service and enjoyed with dinner over the course of a couple hours. The 2001 pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing (still!) with notes of Morello cherry, raspberries, red flowers, oolong tea, leather, and dry earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. The Il Marroneto only gained power with time. Looking back on my notes, the last time I had the 2001 Classico was nearly ten years ago (and I had enjoyed it a few times before that). Since then, I’ve learned a lot about the aging arc of Sangiovese and those experiences were just entering the early drinking window for the 2001 Il Marroneto. This is where I really like them. Drink now with patience and plenty of air and through 2036. Bottle No. 6064 — 10 days ago

Great traditional Brunello, made by "enfant terrible" Alessandro Mori

Mastrojanni (Poderi Loreto e San Pio)

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2019

Bright ruby color with garnet highlights. Aromas of ripe red and black fruit, Asian spices, wet soil, garrigue and wood ash. Flavors of cranberry, red cherries, red plums, tobacco, Earl Grey tea, dark chocolate, grilled herbs and baking spices. Long and lingering finish. Dusty tannins, firm structure and bright acidity. Lovely concentration and mouth coating texture. Bring on the grilled meat. Great choice, Keith S! — 23 days ago

Riserva Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese

Ah, an old favorite jumped off the wine list to us….the perfect accompaniment to truffle tagliatelle! 😋
Tasting notes: 18 years old but could still age much longer, smooth, fresh red fruits (jammy) but a touch leathery/chewy towards the end of the bottle.

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2008

Followed a trio of Barolo with truffles and a magnificent dinner

This bottle paired with chocolate mousse and was a bit unfair but it held up and was a good change of pace to provide more grip

Overall nice balance of body depth and fruit

Tenuta Il Poggione

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2015

Second time trying this from the 2015 vintage, first enjoyed five years ago. This was my Christmas Day wine, when it’s always hard to really appreciate or concentrate on a wine what with everything else going on! I ordinarily go for familiar favourites from the Rhône, or aged Bordeaux. Anyway, this Brunello was still super macho, austere and in need of either more time in bottle or some very rustic, Tuscan food. Or both! — 4 days ago

2018 Vintage of a legendary large producer. Great balance, a bit too tannic for years aging and perhaps requires decanting, breathing. Having visited the winery a few years ago - beautiful Tuscan facility, would like to say more nice things but the Summary is: nice Brunello. Probably a decent value, but only time will tell — 15 days ago

Riserva Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2001

This bottle was opened several hours prior to dinner. The 2001 Riserva pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of ripe Morello cherry, red flowers, leather, black tea, and a lovely mix of cool and warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long, slightly savory and super complex. A textbook Brunello Riserva that leans on the more elegant side of the spectrum. A fabulous pairing with lombo di agnello. Drink now with patience through 2041. — 10 days ago

Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2016

Outstanding modern BDM. First when tasted I hardly could feel Sangiovese, After a half an hour it was a refined BDM — 4 days ago

Fuligni leans more traditional than modern; using large botti grande (although there are some tonneaux in the cellar as well)

Conti Costanti

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2031

A little shy on opening and prominent tannins over 8 hours. Definitely would improve with more cellar time. Overall complex and earthy with bark undergrowth tobacco clove anise balsamic. Lingering finish. — 13 days ago
