Fresh and pristine even at 10 years of age. Arguably Australia’s best Riesling - certainly in the top 3. Aromatics of lime juice with a tiny hint of TDN (paraffin in this case) and a hint of honey. Overall ultra pure with M+ intensity and a touch of peach on the palate. This could be confidentally cellared for another 5 years for added complexity. Dry Riesling doesn’t get much better than this. — 14 days ago

It has been a long time since I drank something like this. As I have often experienced with aged shiraz color degradation is nil. A powerful nose of plums, blackberries and licorice. In the mouth mostly dark fruit with hints of spice. Definitely not showing age, However not enough acid to stop it from getting “sloppy” at the end. Initial aged savoury notes featuring coffee grounds. See if I can continue this note. Wendouree Shiraz produced from ancient vines provides one of Australia’s iconic wines. This however was a little disappointing at 28 years from a big ripe vintage. I must say it still had a full bodied palate with amazing length and persistence with mid palate concentration. Ultra savoury. Despite this I have had better Wendourees. Similar to my sentiments on a previous Delectable note in November 2015. — 5 months ago

We had the battle of the Shiraz at our family gathering over Christmas. A Shiraz from South Australia and South Africa. Both 2016. This Shiraz, despite from the Adelaide Hills where I think it is a little cooler, was very rich, very bold and broad and a slight jammy note on the edge perhaps. People liked it, but all the votes when for the Shiraz of Cederberg from South Africa. Fun!!! — 10 months ago

Barb and I first tasted this wine at the winery in a structured tasting, as the 2019 vintage on 31 March 2021 and it was very impressive. A couple of years later I bought 6 bottles of the 2021 and this is the 2nd of those 6. Made by the dream team of Michael Hill-Smith (Australia’s first MW), David LeMire MW plus winemakers Martin Shaw and Adam Wadewitz. Appley notes, noticeable funk. More detailed notes over the course of the next 4 bottles in the next few years. A class act from the Adelaide Hills. — 17 days ago

The 2014 Jimmy Watson Trophy winner. 30% whole bunch ferment; 2-3% Viognier co-fermented. The winemaker, Steve Pannell is highly awarded in Australia and made the following comment, “Wonderful now but I’ll be keeping a few bottles for a celebration in 2026 and suggest you do the same. “ Written on 17/11/23. This wine was intense in flavour without being too big. Black plum, spice and liquorice. Have the last one in 2030+ if I have the willpower. — a month ago

Good to be back home with my cellar🥰
The wine took a while to open up, but then it showed all the elegance of the Wendouree Shiraz and the muscular intensity of the allegedly oldest vines of Malbec in the world.
It is always something special to open this producer.
Definitely not a typical Australian wine; extremely good with food. I would say supportive with the meal. Long and reassuring.

Pale to mid yellow in colour. The wine was a little cold to begin with. Aromas of talc and lime marmalade, dried flowers - a faint paraffin note - No Kerosene or petrol (TDN). A beautiful aged Riesling from the Clare Valley from Petaluma - a long time favourite producer of Riesling. With air and warming up, some yellow peach notes developing. I see HH said this benefits from decanting which I didn’t do. Drinking at its peak. Sadly my last 2012. — 3 years ago

Wendouree again demonstrating its incredible longevity from very old vines. This Shiraz Mataro blend now 28 years old. Earthy savoury notes on nose and palate together with liquorice and mint. Many Wendouree wines regardless of the particular Cuvee have camphor/menthol notes early in their life but that note has morphed into ginger, eucalypt and compost heap notes with age. Firm yet fine tannins. Full bodied. Barb thought there was a porty note which I’m not totally on board with but I can see where she is coming from. The next night noticeable coffee grounds on the nose. An Australian curio. My last bottle. — 23 days ago

Smells so delicious, like a fruit yogurt

This drinks like it is fresh, with blackberry bramble, subtle and unique red fruits tucked behind the leather ones.

Served blind by me at Sue Bell’s dinner party with Bruce Redman. After being tricked by Sue all week with blind tastings at the winery I was determined to get square. She was up to the task getting just the state wrong. Once I said Adelaide Hills she knew it was a Gruner. Hahndorf Hill are acknowledged as the best producers of Gruner in Australia. Taking its lead from the GV’s of Austria’s Kamptal region. Grapefruit, Citrus and stone fruit. A multi award winner on the Australian Show circuit.
