Muschelkalk Pinot Noir 2022

Fleshy and big at this point with amazing tannins. Too young. Cherry 🍒 driven at this point - the classic E&M black forest herbs are there. Seems to me comparable to a GC Vosne. This is a tremendous effort and will improve over time to a glorious benchmark Pinot. I suspect my rating will go up to a 9.8+ in 5 years. What a wine! Should have bought cases! — 15 hours ago

Check with vom Boden the Importeur in New York if they have this. Muschelkalk translates into/= Limestone from sea shells. The other rare wine from them is called Bundsandstein/Red Sandstone. Typically the winery makes only 1-3 barrels and I have not seen the wine on the shelf recently. My guess would be ca. 80$. These wines are underpriced for what they are and i have been following them since 2009. I did get my bottles from Lyle Fass an E-mail direct Importer for ca. 60$ and are sold out every year. They might not carry the prestige of a Burgh but for me these are the most interesting Pinots.

Buntsandstein Pinot Noir 2018

Ok no formal notes sorry next time. But unlike the 20’s E&M big boys which are delicious to drink now. This needs more time. I penciled in 2026 and will certainly not touch the Muschelkalk after i tried this. Of the Muschelkalk they have often just one Barrel. — 9 months ago

Liaison Pinot Noir 2019

Since Fass is offering the 2019 as a cellar release from the winery i went back to taste the vintage. 2018, 19, 20, 21 are all excellent and different. The 18‘ is more wild and rich, the 19‘ quite elegant and the 20‘big while the 21‘ is probably my favorite a combination of 19‘ & 20‘. The 19 is classic E&M i would drink the vintage and not keep it. Light and elegant, dark cherries, lime, chalk and this hard to define E&M signature best described as black forest meadow with thyme and other herbs. I could drink this by the bucket. — 4 months ago

Pur Müller Thurgau 2019

A stale mimosa or a fresh orange wine. As wild as I've seen E&M go. It has some aromatic complexity and depth but it's simple, juicy fermenting orange grapefruit cocktail at core. — a year ago

Baden Pinot Noir 2021

11.5%. Darker than previous vintages. For 20bucks this is a great value. Unbeatable at that price point. Incredibly juicy. Light and so drinkable. Limited tannins. And not as acidic as in the past. Faint orange zest. Touch cherry. A drink now wine. Not as ‘exotic’ and characteristic as previous vintages. In 2021 their killer wine so far is the E&M Rose. See my notes to that wine. — 5 months ago

Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2010

Wild and animalistic. For sure not something i would expect from a GC. The guests liked it but mostly i think for the GC label. The wine needs tons of air. But it tends to be overoxided before the limited flavors comes through. And i just can’t ignore that. For sure no match at all for an E&M big boy not even close. Pretty harsh tannins, orange rind and essentially almost no fruit. — 6 months ago
