Domaine Marquis D'angerville

Domaine Marquis d'Angerville

Champans Volnay 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2015

Gor
9.4

Certainly tightly wound and young but beaming with elegance, concentration and subtle power. Complex nose of red currants, sour cherries, mint, herbs, hint of roses. Nice grippy tannins and lifted palate of cherries, blood orange, herbs and tar. Long and yet somewhat astringent finish that betrays its young age. The tannic structure and aromatic complexity here could support the development for decades. — a month ago

Volnay 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2014

Beautifully aromatic with rich cherry and red fruits. Earthy and smooth. The tannins are there adding structure but very integrated. A bit of a black tea kind of feel. A bit of salty steak and away the tannins went. — a month ago

Château Léoville-Las Cases

Le Petit Lion de Marquis de Las Cases Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2018

Nose has ripe blueberries, ripe mulberries, crushed blackberries, lacquered wood, damp slate, overly humidified cigar and a touch of cedar.

Palate has blackcurrant, blackberry, black cherry, dried cherry, graphite, iron and cigar ash. Tannins are medium, actually lighter than anticipated, and quite enjoyable. Lots to like on the nose and palate with this youthful Bordeaux.

45% Merlot / 42% Cabernet Sauvignon / 13% Cabernet Franc

Decanted 4H at the time of notes. Drink 2025-2038.

A second label from our favorite Left Bank producer, a wine I've been searching to find for many years and finally landed one in Chicago last year (2021).

Paired to Merlot steaks (Kinderhook Farm; Valatie, NY) and recently dug Carola potatoes from our garden tossed in butter and garden herbs, both finished with flakey Maldon salt.

That would be Left Bank Severn. I love las Cases as well. Most years the Grand Vin is equal to the First Growths.

Château Bel Air-Marquis d'Aligre

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2010

Moist earth, clay and rose on the nose. Subtle nose, never really giving. Some pencil shavings. Palate is rose petals. A stern, lean, acidic, food friendly style with not much of a hint of the vintage’s heat. Iron on the long finish. — a day ago

Château Léoville-Las Cases

Grand Vin de Leoville du Marquis de las Cases Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1982

Delectable Wine
9.3

The bottle of 1982 Léoville Las-Cases was sadly out of condition, though fortunately I tasted another example at a private dinner in Bordeaux a few weeks later. To be honest, I have always preferred the 1985 or 1986 to this vintage, and this gives me no reason to change my mind. It has a surliness on the nose that is uncharacteristic of this vintage, tightly wound tertiary scents, melted tar and pencil shavings. The palate is full-bodied with fine grip, dense and quite powerful, yet it is more impressive than pleasurable. The aforementioned vintages have pulled away from the 1982 in recent years, though it remains a very fine Saint-Julien. It just needs to turn its frown upside down. Tasted at the 1982 Dinner at Hatched. (Neal Martin, Vinous, September 2022)

Closed. Showing intense violet and lavender, some bitter herbs. But without the complexity it had a year ago. — a month ago

Château Léoville-Las Cases

Clos du Marquis Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2015

A blend of 66% Cab Sauv, 31% Merlot and 3% Cab Franc, deep Ruby with aromas of black fruit and floral aromas. On the palate blackberry, currant and plum flavors with cacao and oak notes. Fine tannins, long finish, good balance ending with fruit, cacao, tobacco, earthy herbs and cedar notes. — 15 days ago

Château Marquis de Terme

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2009

A stained cork from bottom to top gave me pause. Phew! All good. Dusty notes dominate early on with stewed plumbs and Aussie scrub (underbrush) not far behind. Let’s see where we are in an hour. Sixty minutes on firmly delivers with a weighty 65% Cab Sauv with, dare I say it, a slight nod to Napa. Chewy tannins with continuous dust rounds it all out. I like this wine. As to down the road…I think we’ve arrived au point. — a month ago
