Quartz Chénas Gamay 2016

Very nice interpretation of the gamay, balanced from one end of the tasting to the other. Blindly, we are in a triangle somewhere between Loire, Burgundy and Beaujolais (or PN from Alsace) The finish is carried by a very beautiful mineral weft unusual in this region. Nice finesse. Very good value for money/pleasure.

Belle finesse. Très bon rapport qualité/prix/plaisir.

Socaire

Palomino Fino Blanco de Albariza 2018

Unfortified 100% Palomino from the Pago de Matalian vineyard in Chiclana, the southernmost point within the Jerez wine region, on Spain’s Atlantic coast. Fermented in old Sherry casks and aged for 24 months without flor.

Because the Jerez-Xérès-Sherry appellation requires its wines to be aged in bodegas within the towns of Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar de Barrameda (the so-called “Sherry triangle”) growers outside these three towns traditionally relied on large bodegas in Jerez to have their wines aged and sold (under different brands). As sherry sales declined, prices paid to these growers became unsustainable and most vineyards in towns like Chiclana were abandoned (from the nearly 3,725 documented in the 1890s, only 139 remain). A partnership of Ramiro Ibáñez and Primitivo Collantes, Socaire is a commendable effort to preserve Chiclana’s winemaking tradition and to revive almost forgotten wine styles (such as dry, unfortified white wines) that were common in the region before the advent of the solera system.

Domaine de la Pépière

Les Gras Moutons Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine Melon de Bourgogne 2019

Lime peel plus that saline/umami flavors of oysters and seafoam, and lots of mineral and crystalline nuances (iodine, chalk, wet granite). A distant touch of wet wool? But... that could have been triggered by the name of this wine, as well.. 🙂
Tight and nervous at the moment, this wine seems to fill in that spot in the chablis-vouvray-mosel triangle, of which I even wasn’t aware that it existed..!
Very pure, elegant and filigreed now, but I expect it to be slightly more espressive in a few years’ time.

Willamette Valley Estate Pinot Noir 2012

Andrew Holod
9.1

So dark and rich, wouldn't you make the switch?
Impressively, almost uncharacteristically, dark for PN. Nose is all dense, crunchy red fruits, cinnamon, with a whiff of ozone/pool chlorine/dusty mineral. Frankly carnal in texture; fleshy and dense, with tannins so smooth that they belie new world origin.
Could be spectacular (almost auto-corrected to spextacular!) with the right food, though this could pass for Syrah.
Oregon Pinot Camp triangle of flavor: red/purple fruit, fleshy, spicy.

Domaine Huet

Le Mont Sec Vouvray Chenin Blanc 2006

Honey and waxy, almost diesel notes. Some hard to pinpoint florals... maybe dried roses. On day two, pure butterscotch nose, more pronounced saline quality. Palate is acid, texture, and just a hint of rs in a perfect equilateral triangle. — 4 years ago

Crianza Ribera del Duero Tempranillo 2015

This is a blend with Merlot in it. Also aged in French Oak barreás for 14 month, not the American Oak of most Spanish wines. Cute label with pink-lavender triangle above the white part. Aged. Smells of cut wood and wet decomposing leaves from an oak. Tea tree and herbal essence oils too. But of berries. Flavors are round and ripe. Hint of mint. Dry and chewy. Hasn’t lost a bit in the aging. Elegant and full bodied. This has plenty of cheerful cherry and some nice bittersweetness. With the style on the bottle and the stuff inside it’s a great buy. — 7 months ago

Langlois-Château

Vieilles Vignes Saumur Cabernet Franc 2016

Superb red Saumur, Old vines associated with aging in oak barrels. With the association of Cabernet-Franc and its paradoxical aromas of tangy red fruits that are still very lively (Nice tangy freshness) and green notes specific to the grape varieties; associated with the woody aromas of the barrel. The result is a beautiful green / red / brown olfactory and taste triangle ... a balanced wine that promises beautiful moments of pleasure for at least the next 5 years.
