Clos Cantenac

Château Cantenac Brown

Grand Cru Classé Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2012

It is time for my #FridayCabernetfix.

Dark ruby in color with a short reddish rim.

Light nose and medium in body with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate and complex, with a very soft mouthfeel.

Showing currants, light wood, black plums, cooked cherries, spices, licorice, chocolates, tobacco leaf, herbs and peppercorn.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries.

This delicious 13 year old Cabernet Sauvignon from Margaux is starting to drink nicely now. Elegant and rich. Fruit forward and nicely balanced. Complex and interesting.

Showing more earth notes than the 2016 vintage, and a little reserved right now.

This 3rd Growth Cabernet is a good sipping wine, and will also pair nicely with BBQ Meats.

A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot. Aged in (60% new) French oak barrels for 14 months.

13.5% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

Château Cantenac Brown

Margaux Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1986

Flight 4 , wine 2. This was quite a difficult wine to read at first , again quite closed , mineral and tobacco edged . Dark fruits. On the palate rounder than expected , good richness and balance , dark cherry , blackberry fruit . Good rounded tannin and ok length . Quite obviously Bordeaux in the context of this tasting , though I had this as the Lynch Bages 1982 when it was actually the Brane Cantenac 1986 …..I give up ! 90

This was an interesting , though challenging tasting , all served blind in flights of 2 wines , 3 flights of 1 Napa and 1 Bordeaux and 1 of 2 Bordeaux; served in a random sequence . The fact that at least a couple of wines were not pristine didn’t help , though if you will taste 8 , 40 year old wines that is probably par for the course . I found it relatively easy to spot whether what was in the glass was Napa or Bordeaux but didn’t actually get a single wine completely correct ! Probably overall the winner of the tasting was Napa (won the 3 rounds 2-1) as they had more suave polished , rounded personalities. Many put the wines the wrong way round , imagining that Napa was Bordeaux etc. The 1982s in general showed poorly too much funk and brett on the Lynch and Talbot but the Duhart showed surprisingly well . The 86s both showed pretty well and equalled the Dominus (even though I didn’t think we had a pristine bottle) . The Montelena was enjoyable , though was the first to oxidise whilst the Inglenook was the biggest positive surprise , still drinking surprisingly well at 47 .

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

Not one of the best Bordeaux that I have drank but quite decent. 20 years old and still holding its own. for the price point back in 2008 it delivered. — 5 months ago

Château Malescot St. Exupéry

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2019

2019 vintage. A totally different style compared to the more classic 2019 Cantenac Brown, but every bit as good. A more flashy, opulent style, flirting with overripeness, but every bit as good. — 7 months ago

Alto de Cantenac Brown Margaux Sauvignon Blanc 2023

Pale lemon in color.

Light nose and medium plus in body with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate and complex.

Showing limes, citrus, green apples, light grapefruits, herbs, minerals and white pepper.

This is a very tasty Sauvignon Blanc from the house of Cantenac Brown in Bordeaux. Rich and elegant. Well balanced and easy drinking.

A good quality wine, that needs some time to open up.

Would be nice to revisit it in 3 years and see how it evolves.

Good by itself as a sipping wine, and better when not too cold.

A blend of 90% Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Sémillon. Aged in used French oak barrels for 12 months.

13.5% alcohol by volume.

A beautiful Bordeaux blend from the Margaux Appalachian. Flowing with flavor of black cherry and anise. This wine has a distinct presence.

Reserve Tapestry Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1997

9.5

The follow up to the 03 Brane-Cantenac. So good but still youthful now as I mentioned this 97 still is in @Paul T- Huntington Beach recent post of his 2013.

The tannins are round, softened but still meaty & somewhat tarry.

The nose is still brooding. Ripe lush, ruby, fruits of, blackberries, black plum, black raspberries, dark cherries, baked to poached strawberries. Dark, rich, sweet forest floor, mix of Indian & Asian spice with palate piercing heat, notes of Cognac, steeped tea, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, black licorice, tarry notes, day crushed rocks, limestone minerals, grey volcanic minerals, light tobacco with ash, used leather, sandalwood, bright, fresh; dark, red, blue florals with violets.

The palate is ripe, lush, juicy & floral fruits of; blackberries, black plum, black raspberries, dark cherries, baked to poached strawberries, raspberry highlights & pomegranate. Dark, rich, sweet forest floor, mix of Indian & Asian spice, notes of Cognac, steeped tea, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon stick, black licorice, tarry notes, day crushed rocks, limestone minerals, grey volcanic minerals/ash, moist, grey clay, light tobacco with ash, used leather, sandalwood, bright, fresh; dark, red, blue florals with violets, insane, waterfall acidity, woven, layered, structured, nicely tensioned with great length and a incredibly balanced, well polished finish that goes on for two to three minutes.

If you are 15-20 years plus patient w/ these bottling’s, they are one of the very best values in Napa Valley.
