Popped and poured into red Solo cups; enjoyed over the course of an hour. The 2006 pours a garnet/purple with an opaque core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears and some sediment. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of ripe and desiccated black currants, blackberries, black cherries, tobacco, Poblano pepper, cocoa, fine warm spices and organic earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin (integrated) and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+. Quite delicious and a really lovely example of the 2006 vintage. Drink now through 2036. — 4 days ago

Opened about 90min prior to service; enjoyed over the course of a few hours. The 2001 Monte Bello pours a deep garnet with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with lovely notes of black currants, blackberries, plum, tobacco, purple flowers, an intoxicating mix of exotic Eastern spices, some cocoa, inorganic earth and minerals. On the palate? The wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose, the finish is long and impeccably balanced. To my palate, this bottle has reached the age when Monte Bello starts to really become interesting. What a delight! Drink now with some air, through 2051. — a month ago

The bottle is heavy!

Distinctively Napa with Bordeaux sensibility. Dark cherry, cassis, blackcurrant, cedar, and a touch of tobacco unfold on the nose. The palate is beautifully structured palate with polished tannins, vibrant acidity, and concentrated dark fruit. Composed and well balanced with long candied finish.

For Bordeaux blend that can age effortlessly for 10-15 years but won’t break the bank, the Mariner and the BV Tapestry are my top choices.

The nose shows blackberry, black currant, baking spices, autumn leafs, iron, and hint of cocoa. Medium to full body. Excellent balance. Supple fine tannins. More Bordeaux like than the Tapestry IMO.
