Cade

Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2017

Shay A
9.0

Finally getting around to posting Day 5 in Napa, our final day. 5 years in a row visiting...hope to make it 6 next year!

First stop was Odette. They pour Cade and Plumpjack wines as they are sister wineries.

This Cade SB was a bit underwhelming, honestly. Grassy and lemon aromatics with a quite tart lime dominant note on the palate. These may be better with a year or two to sit as this seemed really young.

@jesus g : Everything is there for a nice SB...think it was just served too cold for my liking. It improved a bit when I came back to it after tasting through the reds.

Flora Springs

Day 3 in Napa in the books! Running a day behind on notes...Napa time runs slow AND fast!

Main reason we go out this time of year each year...the Flora Springs Trilogy Release Party! Probably the best SB they’ve made to date. Super floral and tropical. Rich and round with kiwi, grapefruit and melon on the palate.

Muir Wood

Arroyo Seco Sauvignon Blanc 2016

Star bright straw gold. Big bosomy nose of… dried pineapple, white pepper, and clover plus hints of other stuff. A real wild ride of aromas! The medium light-bodied palate doesn’t relent either yielding dried tropical fruits, clover, lemongrass, and a hint of vanilla on the finish to round things out. Medium plus acidity (as a good SB should) makes this a perfect food wine. muirwood’s “more wood” style is definitely on display here, but with all of the finesse the variety demands. Greens and seafood are natural pairings, but consider yellow and orange fruits and root vegetables (mango, butternut squash, sweet potato) as well. Drink now, of course. — 18 days ago

Realm Cellars

The Fidelio Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2016

Almost translucent in the glass with a slight green tint. Big nose of tropical fruits hits you right away and doesn’t dissipate. More of a grassy style with notes of quince and kiwi. Crispy acidity and tartness. — 2 months ago

Loved our visit here. Gorgeous property & wines. Bigger style SB with explosive stone fruit & tropical fruit aromatics. Not quite as round and rich as Aesthete or Arkenstone, but very similar. Nice acidity with pronounced notes of honeyed passion fruit & white peach.

Did you taste at Covert?

We did not, went to Azur, Boyd, and Padis today. All great, all very different.

@Brandon Thurber : Oh ok. When I went to Covert 2 or so years ago, they poured Empriente & Azur along with the Covert wines. All nice wines for sure.

Eisele Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2016

Lime zest, underripe pineapple, grapefruit pith, and tropical fruits. A solid core of minerality drives everything forward. Really loved this with oysters and shrimp cocktail. — 3 hours ago

Modus Operandi Cellars

Rutherford Sauvignon Blanc 2017

Day 2 of Napa in the books!

Quick lunch with my friend Jason Moore of Modus Operandi Cellars. He was Weston’s (of Montagu Wines) mentor and is a fellow Texan! He submitted his wines for review for the very first time last year after 10+yrs, and received multiple 92-97pt wines. This SB is so much better than expected...tropical and explosive. Not quite on Arkenstone or Aesthete SB level, but the richness and round texture are very similar. Kiwi, stone fruit, nectarine and a melon/cantaloupe finish. If you enjoy big style SB, not sure there is a better Napa Valley one at $40.

Progeny Winery, up on Mt Veeder, was another standout during our trip. There is a shared ownership/relationship between them and O’Shaughnessy. Same winemaker too. The winery was completed 6-8months ago and is stunning.

This Trinity Blanc was so good. These Rhône whites can be hit or miss for me, but this nailed it. Equal parts Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier. Improved so much as it warmed. Viscous. Honeycomb, tart pineapple and mint aromatics with bruised pear and sea salt on the palate. Delicious.

Thoroughly enjoyed the 2014. Wasn’t a big fan of the Reds. I understand why people like them. Just not me.

@David L : This white wine was probably our favorite white wine of the trip. Extremely impressed.
