Barolo Specola Oddero

Convento Barolo Nebbiolo 2017

2017 vintage. FLB fodder. Decanted and tasted after 15 mins, 45 mins and 1.25 hours. Medium body. Fairly muddy color. A parlor trick of rose petals and tar up front with a battle to the death, both mid and end palates, between chalk and dark chocolate. Chalk won. Not what I would call refined but made up for that with plenty of rusticity/old school/authenticity vibes. Apparently, I liked it more than anyone else here but a bonus .2 for the retro-stylings. Sorrynotsorry. 6.26.26. — a month ago

Consistent notes, if not better after a two-hour decant. A house Barolo?? — a year ago

Rombone Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2018

Figli Luigi Oddero, the Barolo producer in La Morra currently markets one Barbareso and all of the fruit comes from approximately 5 acres of vines they own in the Rombone MGA in Treiso.

Popped and poured. The 2018 “Rombone” pours a light ruby color with a transparent core; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, this is developing and already very pretty with Luxardo cherry, pomegranate, red flowers, dried earth and mild spices. On the palate, the wine is bone dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+ and grippy. A lovely Barbaresco showing the elegance and juiciness of the vintage. Drink now and through 2038.

Scarpa (Antica Casa Vinicola Scarpa)

Bric du Nota Nebbiolo d'Alba 2016

Lovely albeit relatively high-end Nebbiolo. Slightly less smoky than our tasting pair, the Oddero Langhe. Also, much more typical cherry rhubarb grip, and for some, this could pass as a Cru Barolo. Will buy again. — 6 years ago

Langhe Nebbiolo 2017

Bold, structured, and satisfying. Savory, leathery, and a bit spicy. Lacking the balance and fruit of a Barolo or Barbaresco but it gets you most of the way there for a fraction of the price. Great with pizza. — 7 years ago

Heavily tannic but well integrated. Cherry, non French oak, and herbal funk. Great Barolo. — 8 years ago

Moscato d'Asti 2021

Wine pairing alert— or really an alert about the alert: a five yro Mocato D’Asti ( by an esteemed Barolo maker) paired with… a softly stinky, washed rind, soft, French style ( but from Connecticut) cheese. The Moscato was frothy, perky, & not too fruity to meet the cheese everywhere it went. Enough acid cut. And why wasn’t I doing this more previously? Yum. — 4 months ago

This is how a Lange should taste. Juice well integrated tannins, well balanced. And impressively long — 5 years ago

9.2

Does not have the energy and the range of the 2010 and the completeness of the 2016. It does not have the magic of Bartolo, the class of Oddero, and the clarity and transparency of Roagna, but if you delight in delicate refinement, there is nothing like Cavalotto. — 5 years ago

Vigna Rionda Riserva Barolo Nebbiolo 2018

Medium garnet color with a slight pink meniscus. Aromas of anise, tar, dried rose petals and black cherry jam. Flavors of dark cherry, blackberry and bramble berry fruit, black licorice, tobacco and mushrooms. Hints of minerals and baking spices on the long finish. Mouth watering acidity. Full bodied and firm but the tannins are beautifully integrated. Wonderful structure and complexity. Sincerely appreciate Petey and Kasey for sharing this wonderful bottle. — 6 months ago

The aroma has a better lift than Oddero Villero and Serio Borgogno 2017, because of higher acidities and lighter material. — 5 years ago

Vigna Rionda Riserva Nebbiolo 2011

9.4

The aroma has a such a powerfully sculpted personality that the structure seems not sufficient to support it. It is also highly controlled and contained, every detail is clear and well-defined, just like many of the greatest wines in Piedmont, Burgundy and Bordeaux. Just lacks the last degree of spontaneous volatility that defines the magic in wine. — 5 years ago

Bussia Barolo Nebbiolo 2016

8.9

There is not enough lively acidities and tannic grip to provide support, texture and definition for the aromas that are dominated now by old wood and lack detail and focus. Some people like its relaxed, unforced style but the winemaking is not as accomplished as those from Roagna, Cavallotto and Oddero. After 24 hours, the aroma dissipates to reveal the tertiary notes and the tannins come forward. — 6 years ago

Monforte d'Alba Barolo Nebbiolo 1961

1961 Oddero Barolo, pristine bottle with interesting neck tag. Gorgeous mature nose, dark cherries, brown sugar, leather, earth, charred wood. Silky palate, ripe sweet red fruits, dense mid palate, resolved tannins, perfect acidity. Excellent. #odderobarolo #oddero — 7 years ago
