Autumn Frost

Château Rayas

Réservé Châteauneuf-du-Pape Grenache Blend 2008

Rayas 08 exceeded my expectations — it was in great condition. We decanted it at 3 PM and started drinking at 7 PM. In the first phase, it showed sweet red fruit notes. In the second phase, herbal/vegetal notes emerged. In the third phase, a cooling mintiness appeared.

This bottle wasn't as explosively aromatic as the 07 I opened last time — that 07, after two hours of decanting, unleashed an incredibly rich and enchanting floral bouquet. It was like the scent of a garden transitioning from summer into autumn — grand and opulent, with a hint of fading beauty. Notes of black cherry, rose, and blood orange intertwined, and the aromas kept evolving over time — garrigue, incense — complex and alluring, with a grand structure and a rich, round palate.

The 08, on the other hand, feels more like a refined lady from a scholarly family — graceful, gentle, intellectual, with no aggressive edge.

Daumas Gassac

Mas de Daumas Gassac Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2010

What a wine! The nose is so complex with blackcurrant, blackberry, raspberry, dark cherries, tar, oak, mushrooms, autumn damp forest soil, tobacco, cigar box... this is great. The palate is superb! Big, broad and long, with some width, some matter on the sides, some nice black and red berries all along, a touch of oak, a silky mouthfeel that rolls on the tongue, integrated tannins that caress and hug in the rear, and a very long finish with the same berries, a subtle drying layer, some oaky touches, a savoury note and eventually some bitterness that pops up in the very end. This is 16 year-old and kicking. This is grand !
I should add that I had a glass of this using my coravin a few months back and the wine wasn't showing as well as it does now.

Great intel on the coravin, sometimes after the second glass from weeks apart the wine climbs to a better stage (if winemaking precision is at its finest). Otherwise, even with the microscopical puncture the wine becomes volatile and gone!

Torzi Matthews

Frost Dodger Eden Valley Shiraz 2018

Appassimento dry racked - my first of this style. Rich and ripe, thick tannin but far from overdone, lovely savoury black olive, mild spice, nice grip and enough acidity to keep it in balance. Keeps me coming back for more. — 6 years ago

Kabinett trocken Pinot Noir

2017 vintage. Very forest-y with cranberry, crab apple, walnut skin, autumn leaves (both dry and damp), birch, red flowers, pomegranate, dry herbs. Good typicity and balance between earthy and fruit flavors. Definitely in the lighter spectrum and higher acid than any New World examples. — 7 years ago

Produttori del Barbaresco

Barbaresco Nebbiolo 1982

xmas eve. Really nice bottle. Medium brown / crimson hue. Was firing right out of the bottle. Double decanted for 6hrs and served with ny strip roast and it only got better. Tar, autumn leaves, ash. And a slightly syrupy caramel note that gave a bass (but not roasted) note. — 8 years ago

Enderle & Moll

Liaison Pinot Noir 2019

2019 | Pinot Noir
Enderle & Moll; Liaison
Rhine Valley; Baden, Germany
(92-93; drink 2024-29, 2H decant)

Paired to duck confit & green lentils, a favorite meal for cats and humans in our humble abode.

After a mere ~13 month wait after receiving into the cellar, we're finally pulling a cork today. This really wants another year to unfurl for my palate. All the hallmarks of this wine are here; ripe black cherry, tree moss, dehydrated strawberry, damp cedar, past season rose, orange zest, slight VA but unobtrusive, medium finish, dried cranberry.

A very special/unique vintage for Liaison based on this commentary from the winemakers:
"Unfortunately, we had quite heavy frost in some of our best red sandstone vineyards last year and additional problems with hail and high fungus pressure, which is the reason why we ultimately decided to only bottle our "Basis", the "Liaison" and our "Muschelkalk" (shell limestone) this year. The barrels from the other top vineyards ended up in our "Liaison", which is ultimately reflected in the quality of this years "Liaison"..."

With the best of luck, this situation will not be repeated; so 2019 drink happily knowing it's a blend of the best grapes.

Bodegas Numanthia

Numanthia Toro Tempranillo 2003

Prior notes mostly apply; more stanky than our last bottle, green hay and decaying leaves. Decanted +4H, should be showing correctly tomorrow...Based on prior experience.

Nose has dry autumn leaves, ripe black cherry, dried tart cherry and a hint of coffee grounds. Palate has ripe black cherry, dried blackberry, moist soil, mild tannins on the medium finish. Very heavy sediment in the bottle.

A demon of a wine, with an angel’s charm. One of my all time favourites.
Amazing aromatics with ripe cherry & blackberry, autumn leaves, cedar and orange peel. Medium bodied on the palate with a Herculean dry tannic grip. Great acidity and impeccable balance & carries the 15% alc effortlessly.
This one, after 9y, is still a baby - got to keep the other bottles well hidden so I don’t drink them too early.

Domaine Armand Rousseau

Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2000

Mushroom, earthy, autumn leaves, tinge of metal. Dried fruits, particularly prunes and persimmon. Dusty and cool. At first, guessed Volnay/Echezeaux then settled with Gevrey. Guessed Rene Engel as the producer due to the purity on the nose and sweetness on the palate. I'm told this is not characteristic of Rousseau Chambertin though. Developed basil leaf and menthol nose towards the end. — 8 years ago
