Shafer

Shafer Vineyards

Hillside Select Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Hillside Select is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged 32 months in 100% new 60-gallon French oak barrels. Deep Ruby with pronounced aromas of red/black fruits, with hints of cedar, floral, oak, herbs & spice. On the palate flavors of concentrated ripe blackberry, cherry and raspberry preserves, pepper spice, leather and earthy cacao. Fine savory tannins, well balanced, long finish, great structure ending with fruit, spice, oak and earthy mineral character. Outstanding! — 11 days ago

Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay 2019

Found another ‘19. Lemon gold color with aromas of stone and tropical fruits with citrus, sweet floral and complex spice. On the palate flavors of ripe melon, pineapple, apricot and notes of honeysuckle with hints of lemon zest and butter biscuit notes, delicate, complex and well balanced, big and full Chardonnay. Long finish, savory, ending with mineral tones and nutty toasty character. Will age well. Outstanding! While I usually do not decant whites, this one will benefit to breathe a bit! — 3 months ago

Premiere Napa Valley Auction SunSpot Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Premier Napa Valley Barrel samples. The Shafer Sunspot was fairly tight, structured with good balance & length that will need 5-10 yrs to open where the Spottswoode was open & drinking well with lovely fruit & spice. Group preferred the Spottswoode for its immediate pleasure. — 4 months ago

TD-9 Napa Valley Red Blend 2019

A really satisfying wine, heavy on the merlot. The key for these ripe merlot-based CA wines is some structure and discernable second-tier flavors behind the overwhelming dark fruit and alcohol. This one delivers - blueberries on the nose initially, with chocolate cake, earth, and cinnamon. Had sampled the 2018 last year; this far better. — 5 days ago

Anakota

Helena Dakota Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Nose: raspberry, blackberry, cassis (?), dust. Subtle herbs, the kind you’d find in some kind of health food herbal tea for what ails you. A little leather.

Taste: absolutely delicious. Weighty, tastes as it smells, but bigger and juicier more red fruit than the nose - yet very balanced, with lots of mineral flavors besides. Not as complex as the very best I’ve had, but extremely tasty. A little more toasty coffee on the palate as you sip it. I may like this better than the Shafer I had recently. 94.
