Wieder mal ein Sforzato. Dies, nachdem ich mich bei den letzten etwas „sattgetrunken“ hatte. Dieser…ist….anders. Harmonisch, elegant balancierend zwischen klarer himbeerfrucht, leicht animalischen noten und….alk (16%!!). Traumhaft gut eingebunden. Now this is an unusual wine. It is made in the Amarone style but with Nebbiolo. The district Nebbiolo qualities are present: rose, tar, red fruits, but supercharged with more richness than would every be typical old a Barolo. Although fairly weighty, it wasn't over the top such that the texture was like soft velvet, with caressing tannins. Over time it opened up to reveal beautiful layers through the finish. Certainly unlike anything I've tasted before.

Sforzato di Valtellina by Nino Negri 2011 - 100% Nebbiolo from Lombardy - extremely well-perfumed nose. Flowers (mainly roses but some purple flowers as well) and cherries and a hint of balsamic. Very similar to a Barolo, and less tannic than an old school Barolo of this age but really beautiful wine with a heavier emphasis on the floral notes. Similar to a La Morra in style - heavy tho at 15.5% ABV — 10 years ago

Senses immediately overloaded, in a good way, with a bouquet of lavender tea, smoked cherrywood, tobacco, cedar, vanilla, and as someone here astutely observed, Alpine herbs. Buried underneath that is wild mushroom, wild raspberries, and cherries. Lasting nice finish, though a bit heavy on the alcohol compared to its southern nebbiolo cousins, but given the sforzato Amarone-like production process, this makes senses. One of the finest reds I've had in some time, certainly on par or better than the other nebbiolo I've tasted.

Better yet, I scored this for a steal of a price at a local Total Wine who either thought this was too old or didn't know what they had. — 2 years ago

Man the Appasiemento is really showing in this wine. Yowza. Tar, roses, raisins. Smells almost like Lessona Sforzato. Really weird. Some nice older library books, old wood and sultana. What a crazy nose. I like it. Palate is much more classic than the nose suggests. Big, ripe but also classy and elegant with dark cherry fruit and wood shop shavings. Luscious and juicy but my only issue is it’s drying and the tannins outpace the fruit. Drink now versus aging it longer. — 4 years ago

Still super young, slowly opens up only after 48h!
Very fruit for a Sfursat, with ripe dark berries and blackberry jam, a touch of kirsch and some leather & spices in the background. On the palate more Sfursat like, the spices and richness comes out yet his one has a juicy acidity that is singing! Impeccably balanced, layered, complex yet elegant and with polished tannins. A beautiful wine - just don’t open it yet! — 8 years ago

Wow what a surprising and interesting wine. Done in amarone styling this wine must be very intense on release. At 24 years old it was still punchy but very drinkable. Layers of flavors and aromatics was actually great with the rack of lamb — 8 months ago
