Amarone meets Barolo. An amazing wine (and appellation) that I never knew existed. Super rich and powerful due to its appassimento styling, but with the elegance and aromatics that are inherent to Chiavennasca (or Nebbiolo as we call it everywhere outside Lombardy). Tannins are firm but fine, and a nice dollop of acidity to make this an extremely versatile food wine. Finishes long and sweetly spiced. Like Amarone this can probably age forever, but it definitely be approached now.

Second from the Valtellina tasting. Sun dried Nebbiolo (similar technique to Amarone, but predates it). Roars out of the bottle. It is intense and hot. Not overextracted, but full of spice and confidence. Rusty orange hue, which immediately makes me happy. There's plenty of blue and black fruit, and it's kept in check with great structure.

Sforzato di Valtellina by Nino Negri 2011 - 100% Nebbiolo from Lombardy - extremely well-perfumed nose. Flowers (mainly roses but some purple flowers as well) and cherries and a hint of balsamic. Very similar to a Barolo, and less tannic than an old school Barolo of this age but really beautiful wine with a heavier emphasis on the floral notes. Similar to a La Morra in style - heavy tho at 15.5% ABV
