Estate Bottled Syrah 2006

Cherry, black cherry, dark tertiary notes, slightest hint of brett far in the background. Beautiful brickish red, decent amount of sediment on walls of bottle. Medium body, med tannin (aged, chill, activated with turbulence). Elegant.

Fantastic on its own, and with a nice steak, or turkey with cranberry.

This has long been one of my favorite California wines ever made, and I think it is one of the most profound expressions of terroir in the state. I’ve been drinking it regularly for the last 10 years or so. Lately, I’m sad to say, it has begun to decline a bit. The bottles I’m opening aren’t quite at their best the way they used to be. Nonetheless while the sour cherry brightness may have been replaced with dried cherry, herbs and leather this is still a remarkably pleasurable bottle of wine with gorgeous structure and deep crushed-granite minerality. — 18 days ago

Still young, but still opened up beautifully to give ripe faro fruit and berry, licorice, black pepper, fresh olive paste, blood, game, beautifully sappy, phenolic herbs, and an exotic hint of peach pit that emerges slowly. Opaque ruby in the glass, the appealingly ripe fruit notes are joined by spice cake, and an undercurrent of smoky mineralogy. Nice mineral structure overall. Beautifully long finish that leaves you with a subtle and sweet taste of white flowers. Beautiful Syrah. — a month ago
