Margaret Barossa Sémillon 2005

See previous notes - this wonderful old Semillon keeps getting better and better. Mid Lemon in colour. Aromas of Lanolin, beeswax, wet hay, lemongrass and toast. 0n the palate a soapy texture amongst the citrus and honey notes with refreshing bright acidity. Tastes much younger than 15 years and will probably still be giving pleasure on its 20th birthday but sadly for me this is my last bottle. Totally unoaked demonstrating how good Semillon puts on weight with age and doesn’t need oak unless you want to drink it young which misses the point as Murray Tyrell used to often say. A real treat to drink this wine - the following day the citrus was riper with notes of mandarin. Stunning. — 8 days ago

One of the few very very very good sem out the Hunter Valley. I had something slightly younger in the last few years, but I can recognise your descriptors. Well done Sir🤤..actually😷

Thanks Cec. I can you see you are a lover of old Semillon purchasing some old examples from Halliday’s cellar. Good on you.

Big, expressive nose, roasted notes but still fresh, charcoal, gamey, meaty, olivey, ripe, spices, really not subtle and very exuberant aromas. Palate is juicy, concentrated and complex. Structured, sappy and deep. Long, finesse and linear. Best of these yet. Seems they look a leap between 12/13 and 17. 9.2 for now. Air will help. I’ll be back. — a day ago

Oooh. Ooh. Not sure the vintage my local place had, but it was a good one. Need to snag a full bottle of this for Christmas or similar. — 13 days ago

Barrel X Saar Riesling 2015

Just concluded the annual Fall seclusion at our cabin in the Rangeley lakes region of Maine, mobile service up there is mostly non-existent, after several days I am posting again. Notes are somewhat brief, as my focus is relaxing and watching the Common Loons swimming and diving in the cove in front of our camp.

Nose has bright green apple, saline solution, distant petrol, under-ripe peach, sliced apricot, clover honey and wet flint
Palate has effervescent and tart apple juice, tart pear, under-ripe peach, green apple peel, wet limestone with solid acidity and a ever lingering sweet/salty/tart finish. A great bottle!
