Odi Gallo

Sami-Odi

Little Wine #10 Syrah

Dark ruby in color with a short purple rim.

Showing a very pretty nose with nice complexity.

Full-bodied with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with black currants, plums, cooked cherries, light oak, chocolates, spices, coffee, light vegetables, earth, herbs, cola, licorice and peppercorn.

Short finish with medium tannins and tangy cherries.

This Australian Shiraz is very unique and interesting. Showing a very pretty nose, but the palate is lacking fruit.

A little unbalanced, but good by itself and better with food. Alcohol is nicely integrated by now.

A blend of Shiraz grapes from the 2015 vintage thru 2020. Bottled in 2020. A small production of only 6,327 bottles.

13% alcohol by volume.

89 points.

$150.

Little Wine #9 Syrah

Another Aussie Syrah. This one completely different to the brooding depth of a Penfolds. Fresh and fruity with blackberry jam and a saline finish. Little bit of menthol and pepper rounds this off. Lovely wine but slightly overpriced — 3 years ago

Torremilanos Ojo Gallo Tempranillo 2020

“Ojo Gallo’, Castellano for ‘rooster eye’ (in other words, what the French call ‘oeil de perdrix’), hearkens back to the traditional clarete style of the region. This dark rosé (light red?) is a field blend of very old vines of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Bobal, Monastrell, Viura, Albillo and Malvasia co-fermented in cement and raised for 8 months in used barrels before bottling without added sulfur” — 4 years ago

DW-Old Barossa Valley Syrah 2013

Nothing to add to my previous note of May 11, 2019 nearly 3 years ago. I must admit I don’t see a lot of savoury development with time in cellar. They are delicious when you first open them and 3 years later, much the same with that solid core of old vine fruit and silky tannins still dominating proceedings. — 4 years ago

Château Calon-Ségur

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2012

The community of Saint-Estèphe has it roots in the Gallo-Roman origins of this chateau. A blend of 78% Cab Sauv, 20% Merlot & 2% Petit Verdot. Deep Ruby with aromas of dense sweet black fruits with herb and earthy spice. On the palate flavors of black cherry and blackberry, currant like, with tobacco, tar and hints of vanilla exposing mushroom notes. Well balanced, ripe textured tannins, long finish ending with earthy character. Nice, has plenty of room to develop. — 7 years ago

Hoffmann Dallwitz Syrah 2018

From the 2018 vintage entirely. Fraser seems to do less blended vintages these days - perhaps in this case because 2018 was very good and bountiful. Red fruited and muscular, vital and fresh, and in perfect balance. In oak for 78 weeks. A plummy palate finishing with savoury charry and always silky fine grained tannins. This is my first of 3 bottles in the cellar. Wonderful wine from ancient vines some of which date back to 1888. — a month ago

Little Wine # 5 Red Blend

On the nose I get spectacular dark fruit and spices, on the palate not so much: notes of graphite, licorice, grilled bacon, cocoa nibs, coffee grounds, charcoal and black olives show up.
LW5 is mainly from vintage 2015 and 2014, with a splash (14%) of 2013 and 2012; only 4955 btls made.

PS: even better on day 2!

Hoffman Dallwitz Little Wine #8 Syrah 2021

My last Little Wine #8 - see previous notes, from only 17 weeks ago - these will be brief. A blend of 5 vintages of 2015 to 2019 inclusive. Very much the product of ancient vines which it is. Black fruits with plums and dark chocolate with those trademark silky tannins and low acid. One could not help but love this. I see Suckling gave this 97 points. I just took delivery of this year’s allocation which is mainly from the fabulous 2021 vintage in South Australia. — 3 years ago

Baby Tui Syrah 2012

This wine need decanting maybe 4 hours. When opened at the beginning rather harsh and bitter muted taste. The the strong red fruit and rhubhart emerge and then more black fruit, eculpytus and earth taste. At the end it become a much better wine — 5 years ago

I had this wine 20+ years ago. Remember coming out of pocket about $40, hoping it’s would be good. This was part of the “next level” of Gallo wines without actually changing the name. It was considered near the top shelf for them at the time. Enjoy your birthday!

Signature Series Zinfandel 2015

Zin sounded right on this cool, rainy day. Totally rewriting my review after an hour. A big whiff of sour fruit (not bad). Thinner mouthfeel than i expected. The taste is dried fruits: prune, dates, apricot. Chocolate, licorice, sweet things. There in an odd charred element, a bit like pipe tobacco but burned. Not terribly off putting, but I do think it's getting tired. 11 years! @Doug Powers That's like senior citizen old!

XIV Syrah 2014

Dense purple/black in the glass - opaque. Not giving much on the nose initially following decanting. Needed vigorous swirling. Barossa plum, prune and earth. Very full bodied on the palate. Quite concentrated. A very big wine in comparison to many other Sami-Odi Cuvées I’ve had over the years. HH said It needs ages (“drinking window of 2018 to 2041 - over extracted?)” I tend to think the difficult vintage conditions in 2014 as explained by Fraser is the reason. Harvest was a full 2 months later than normal - harvesting the 2nd shooting of the vines during the first 2 weeks of April. Yielding only 274 dozen. This wine has a long cellaring future. An element of tannic astringency which is more a result of the size of the wine. This is the first of 3 bottles I purchased in 2016. It will be many years before I have the next one. — 3 years ago

@Bryan Kesting Hello Bryan, I have 1 Baby Tui left from the excellent 2012 vintage. I think it is a fantastic wine. I know sometime Delectable correspondent Bill Bender is a big fan. I was keeping it for a few more years to see how it tastes at say 14 or 15 years of age.
