Grand Rutherglen Topaque Tokay

See recent notes for the Stanton and Killeen Grand Muscat. This is the Topaque (cannot call it Tokay any more) made from the Muscadelle grape. Like the Grand Muscat the average blended age is 15 to 20 years. Very similar in flavour profile with the Muscat, the latter probably a bit sweeter with more molasses notes. This Topaque is a tiny bit more bitter with caramel, toffee and a lot of liquid raisin character. Thoroughly delicious. These old Rutherglen fortifieds are one of Australia’s gifts to the vinous world. — 5 days ago

Tasted blind. Great nose but a tiny bit of taint. My first taste tells me this packs a big wallop. Huge fruit, acidity and structure. Lemon chiffon, white flowers, earth and rocks, some iodine. Motor oil weight. The taint was minor but just bothersome enough. Without it this would merit a bigger score. — 5 days ago

Suisun (su-soon) Valley, which lies to the Southeast of Caymus and a 40-minute drive. Dark Ruby with aromas of dark fruit and exotic spices on this Petite Sirah. On the palate flavors of blackberry and ripe blueberry with smoky oak, herb notes and dusty drying smooth tannins. Well balanced on a long finish ending with a mineral tang. This Grand Muscat is a step up from the Classic 12 year old I tasted 95 weeks ago. Liquid raisins, milk chocolate and toffee with incredible intensity. These are great to sip after dinner in winter but not as appealing as the weather warms up unless served with a slight chill. I hope the coming Summer is not as destructive as last Summer. — 8 days ago

Richebourg Grand Cru Pinot Noir 1996

Tasted blind. Dark purple with tawny rims. Powerful sharp nose. Notes of black fruit, pepper, rhubarb, dark spice and dark earth. Has that tinny mouth feel that I’ve associated with 96s before. I find this young and harsh, with a massive core of fruit hidden underneath. The profile implies to me it’s Vogue and I throw out a 99 Musigny guess. Others liked this wine more than me. I question if the fruit can ever balance with the in-your-face acidity and structure. Some 96s have stated to soften and move into a drinking window. For me, not this one yet. — 12 days ago

There was definitely some oak there... it’s the shrill acidity that dominated the experience tho. Maybe with a lot of air it might have resolved and softened up a bit

Grand Cru d'Alsace Riesling 2014

Hazy and almost color of wet hay, this did not present as a very attractive wine. But looks, as we all know, can often be deceiving. In fact, this was a gift for the senses! On the nose, I detected the presence of brettanomyces but it was kept well in check. The real story was the bruised apple, Bosc pear, lemon citrus, decaying flowers, wet stone, and spices. I didn’t want to stop smelling my glass! On the palate, slightly over ripened Pome fruits, lemons, earth and spices. Super dry. High acid. Long, long finish. What a wine! This was a killer pairing with scallops & white fish ceviche accompanied with roasted Brussels sprouts & crispy leeks. Drinking at or near peak but should last for years. — a day ago

Light gold. Looks young. Took 5 hours to open up and show its stuff. In hour 6 this was cruising. Saline and sea shells, wispy lemon fruit, some honey, some white stone. The guesses from the fellas were 2002 Rav Clos and 1996 Rav Valmur. Shows how these properly stored aged Raveneaus can age effortlessly. — 5 days ago

Dark ruby in color with a thin reddish rim.

On the nose blueberries, black plums, black cherries, sweet strawberries, licorice, vanilla, oak, chocolates, earth, dark coffee, light alcohol and pencil lead.

Full bodied with medium plus acidity. Bold yet elegant.

Dry on the palate with black currants, plums, cherries, chocolates, tobacco, dark coffee, light cedar, earth, leather, vanilla, licorice, spices, peppercorn and herbs.

Medium on the finish with soft tannins and tangy pomegranates.

This is an interesting Cabernet Sauvignon blend from Israel. Showing nice complexity with a nice mouthfeel. Feels more like a Right Bank Bordeaux, which is very interesting.

Still young, but already approachable, and showing good potential. A good quality wine, that would be nice to revisit in 5 years.

Needs 3 hours to open up properly, and remove some of the acidity.

Tangy and spicy. Rich, elegant and extracted. Very tasty.

Good by itself and better with food. Paired very nicely with Brie cheese.

A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Petit verdot. Aged for 24 months in French Oak barrels. Kosher.

14% alcohol by volume.
