Bass Phillip

Crown Prince Gippsland Pinot Noir 2017

A cloudy Ruby red as you often get with unfiltered Bass Phillip Pinots. However it makes for a wine of profound palate intensity - amazing as it is the 5th ranked Pinot Noir Cuvée from Bass Phillip. Red fruits and forest floor - decayed plant matter. Made to be drunk up to 5 years of age but could go on up to 8 years if desired. — 9 days ago

Bin No 1 Great Western Shiraz 2013

An opaque dark crimson in colour. Herbaceous on the nose with Mint, spice and plum - earthy mineral nuances as well. Medium to full bodied palate with plum and mint, essentially savoury, a touch of black pepper - still with firm tannins. From a very old pedigreed area for long living Shiraz in Great Western in Victoria. Good value and QPR at $25 AUD from Bests. I have Bin 0 and Thompson’s Family Cuvées that are older than this but not nearly ready. — 8 days ago

Tellurian

Heathcote Viognier 2019

2019 vintage. Had a taster at work and took the rest home. Didn't notice the heat upon first tasting, but a little excessive upon revisiting. Apricot, nectarine, white grapefruit pith, jasmine, dried orange peel, little back and of clotted cream. Oak definitely more prominent second time around, though richness and concentration persistent throughout. Well-executed manifestation of barrel-fermented Viognier, which I find difficult to execute. — 3 days ago

Bass Phillip

Premium Gippsland Pinot Noir 2010

Always a pleasure to have a Bass Phillip Premium Pinot Noir from a good year. My 2nd last bottle of 6. Prior notes still apply - In Summary: Light Ruby in colour with a tawny edge. A beautiful nose with aromas of dried roses, red florals in general, Sous Bois and mushrooms. Medium plus palate intensity. Stewed red fruits with some savoury notes. I agree with winemaker Phillip Jones when he says this wine has great texture. This would certainly hold its own in any blind tasting with leading red Burgundies. — 13 days ago

Issan Vineyard Pinot Noir 2011

5th and 6th bottles of the 2011 case drunk in the last week. Fruit has turned and now has overripe/raisin notes on nose but especially on palate. Still rich and complex, but it needs the freshness of youth to balance out the inherent body and ripeness of the fruit when first bottled. Drinks like a fully mature cab/shiraz. Spectacular in youth, but ages quickly. — a month ago

Bass Phillip

Premium Chardonnay 2013

It was interesting to compare this top Australian Chardonnay with the Dry River from New Zealand. A similar age and similar price. Straw yellow plus in colour. The nose is more citric than stone fruit with a note of roasted nuts. On the palate baked lemon with a noticeable saline note. Medium acid. Subtly. different to the Dry River - the Bass Phillip is slightly more fulsome but overall not much in it. I would call it a dead heat at 95 points each. Both are excellent. — 13 days ago

@Ron R When I first started buying Bass Phillip over 20 years ago, Chardonnay was not offered. From memory they’ve been offered for only about 12 years but that’s a guess. The Premium Chardonnay comes from only an acre of vines.

Heathcote Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Perfect blend balance, spice and all things nice from the Shiraz and the cab cuts the sweetness. Such a great example of the Heathcote terroir. Drinking great now but think it might age well. Put 3 away — 7 days ago
