Clonakilla

Clonakilla

Canberra District Riesling 2015

This wine reinforces how good the ACT (Canberra District) is for Riesling. White flowers, Talc, Lime - paraffin notes developing. Probably a 15 year drinking window and therefore in its early stages at 6 years. Developing honey and toast characters. This wine has a stellar show record. Clonakilla only enters one show which is the Canberra Wine Show where this won Best Canberra Riesling, Best Riesling, Best White and finally Champion Wine of the Show. On the strength of this I just bought 6 bottles of the just released 2021 Riesling. — 2 days ago

Lovely note. I've been buying these for yonks. You're absolutely correct when you say that at 6 years that it's entering its drinking window. They can be pretty neutral to my palate for years before they settle into something far more interesting.

Clonakilla

Hilltops Shiraz 2017

Silky tannins, syrupy. Strawberries and raspberries. Red cherries and licorice. But of peppery heat. Leafy on the palate. For the pricepoint, a great drop. — a month ago

Canberra District Shiraz Viognier 2018

Lovely lithe expression of syrah with viognier adding voluptuous notes. Floral Cote Rotie-esque perfumes with a delicate pepperiness. So transparent and elegant. By night two this is showing purple and pink flowers, candied violets, iron, fresh black raspberry, brambly notes, a touch of tropical fruit. Definite structure, but it’s all grace and poise, like the muscle of a ballet dancer. Perfectly judged hint of sweetness on the finish. — 2 months ago

One of best wines this year - noir with complexity -
love the fruity jam like textures that remind me of a clonakilla Shiraz lovely wine .

Helm

Premium Riesling 2010

Musky and mineral notes. Lime rather than lemon on nose and palate with grapefruit. The shrill acidity of 8 years ago now diminished but still high at 10 years of age. Quite tangy and refreshing. The Canberra District has proven to be very suitable for Riesling with producers like Helm and Clonakilla. — a year ago

Hi Bob. Is it still good to hold? I've got a few 09s in the cellar. Had a stunning 05 Clonakilla the other week. Loads of time left in it.

@Travis W I would say so Travis. Certainly plenty of acid left. Just tasted a 2002 Petaluma Hanlin Hill Riesling which blew us away. Notes to follow.

Clonakilla

Canberra District Viognier 2014

See previous notes. My last bottle of what was an excellent Viognier. This was mid Lemon in colour. Notes of pear and honeysuckle. Palate whilst being delicate has great texture with real persistence. Isn’t as unctuous or with the concentration of a Condrieu but wonderful nonetheless. Drinking at its peak. — a month ago

Clonakilla

Shiraz Viognier 2010

Mid Ruby in colour. An enticing perfume - very spicy, red florals with a little white pepper. That small percentage of Viognier contributing to the wonderful aromas. The spice/white pepper notes with diminished savoury plum mingle on the medium weight palate. From a wet year in the ACT apparently but this is still brilliant and very different to a Barossa or McLaren Vale blockbuster. This is the best Shiraz Viognier in Australia most local critics would agree. — 3 months ago

G’day Travis. Plenty of future here. A leading Oz critic has a window of 2012 to 2030. An excellent wine.

Fantastic. Thanks Bob. It's my local winery along with Collector Wines. Have you tried any wines from Collector Wines?

I’ve had the odd wine from Collector but don’t know much about them.

Petaluma

Hanlin Hill Riesling 2011

From the difficult wet 2011 vintage in South Australia - at least the whites fared better than the reds. Pale gold in colour, light in body but persistent in flavour with good length despite the vintage. The palate has put on weight over the years. A delicious and technically correct Clare Valley Riesling - no Kerosene. Interesting to compare with the Crawford River (2013) and the Clonakilla (2010). — a year ago
