I thought for my 4000th Delectable note I should choose something special and I thought a 40 year old Penfolds Grange would fit the bill. This is back in the day when “Hermitage “ was allowed on the label. There was an immense crust on decanting reflecting the drought year of 1983. The colour was an amazing dark dense Ruby with no hint of a tawny edge. Aromas of coffee grounds, mocha, chocolate, fading blackberry, and lavender. Barb thought like an old lady’s powder drawer. Still a solid core - the intestinal fortitude (guts) of this wine is incredible. Finishing with soft silky dry tannins. This could easily have gone on for another 10 years. Andrew Caillard MW had a drinking window extending up to 2040 which would make it nearly 60 years old. The lasting impression are those silky tannins. 1983 was a drought year in South Australia hence the persistence and age of this beautiful wine. I paid about $60 for this in the late 1980s and Wine Searcher had a value of $980 on 2/2/23. — 3 years ago

Reddish tawny. Youthful nose. Notes of black currants, blackberries, herbs and spices and some menthol. Silky in the mouth, although at first it comes off as delicate. With more air, some spice and white pepper notes develop, and this goes full on Chave and Hermitage power on you... Not bad for Syrah that's pushing 40 years in age! — 5 years ago

Poured into a decanter about an hour prior to service. The 1983 pours a deep, slightly hazy garnet color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of ripe and desiccated dark cherry, blackberry, dried purple flowers, Poblano pepper, coffee, beef roast, earth and warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin (integrated) and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+. This bottle of the 1983 was absolutely singing tonight and I found it to be a lovely pairing with braised pheasant. Drink now through 2033+. — 2 months ago

it’s interesting because this bottle was not properly kept for several years, the cork fell apart upon opening, but this 1983 vintage ,was still delightfully good ! in spite of the improperly kept history, as a Sauturne. It has a nice delightful, sweet and aromatic taste that was quite pleasant to drink. It was open today, March 22, 2026. — 3 months ago

Bit old but the tannins stood up to the test, the cork was not looking good. Had this at thevar with kenlee Rufie and weng kit. You could really taste the age - had a dried fruit and full of tertiary notes. Vanilla oak red fruit. Went a bit flat at the end. — 4 years ago
