Friday the 13th: Find Good Luck in Great Wine

It’s Friday and it’s the 13th, so you know what that means…If you’re superstitious, do not open any umbrellas inside, avoid walking under ladders, and try your hardest not to shatter any mirrors. If you love all things scary, then maybe you’ll spend your Friday watching the ten thousand films in the Friday the 13th movie franchise. Whether you are superstitious, skeptical, or couldn't care less about Friday the 13th, it's still Friday, and that means you should definitely be drinking wine. We recommend grabbing a bottle from your favorite region and make sure it’s the 2013 vintage. Looking for a goth wine to match the energy for today? Check out Ellen Clifford’s feature, Goth Wines for the Perennially October Soul . Cheers!

Podere Pradarolo

Velius Rosso Asciutto 2013

Ink splatter sediment from seven years in bottle. Still full of life.

Smells of brand new leather - like driving a new car off the lot. Cedar, clove, sour cherries and blackberries. Acidity could burn a hole in your carpet.

Fattoria La Lecciaia

Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Manapetra 2013

Really lovely brunello tonight - black cherries, tobacco and just the right amount of sweetness to bring everything together. Great with oxtail soup — a year ago

J. Daniel Cuvée Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

1 hour decant(chunky and cloudy sediment). A regal inky dark ruby red color. On the nose: Subtle notes of jammy blackberry, floral, graphite, and cedar. Taste: Elegant, smooth, lush full body wine with jammy blackberry, dark cherry, spice, currants, leather and a chocolate espresso long dry finish. Little tannic bite at the end demanding a few more years to fully come together. Still, really enjoying this Saturday night! Cheers! — a year ago

Maison Chanzy

Clos De Vougeot Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2013

Rose petal, cherry, an earthy component too, a touch of caramel and bit of heat. Wow this is intense. The palate is a monster. There is width, matter, length. There is a massive acid drive, a good grip on the sides with a matter which you could chew on, a rather round, spherical mid palate with an explosive cherry, and a long finish with cherry, these rose notes in retro, and a tiny bit of bitterness to make it classy and to add a layer of complexity. I would have loved a tad more fruit on the nose, up front in the palate and toward the end (maybe a vintage thing) but I'm grateful for the experience. Sometimes you just feel the need to upgrade your standards right 😊? — a year ago

Vincent Dauvissat

La Forest Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2013

Another terrific showing from the superb Vincent Dauvissat. After an hour decant the wine shows its racy energy, stony minerality, chamomile, oyster shells and its seamless integration of oak and acid. Finishes wonderfully long and with great tension. — a year ago

Gianetto Barolo Nebbiolo 2013

Celebrating the 2020 election results. Very dark brick color. Supple medium–full bodied. Dark tar and good dried roses and thyme. Prune, cocoa, juicy red fruit. Maybe a little less mellowed and more full than other 2013 we’ve had? Anyway, delicious. From Flatiron Wines. — a year ago

Château La Nerthe

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2013

I bought a bunch and tried these over several years. Pale lemon with aromas of stone and green fruits with a citrus notes. On the palate flavors of apple, peach and pear, crisp with good balance, fresh with lively acidity. Long finish, ending with nutty earthy tones. Distributor I met indicated wine can be put down for a few years, he was correct, outstanding wine, still tasting great. — a year ago

Le Supplément Syrah 2013

2013 vintage Big purple monster that is still young. Best sips at the end of the bottle. Give it a few more years or time in a decanter. Will be a 10 in a few years. — a year ago

Val di Suga (Angelini)

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2013

Plucked an 8 year old Brunello in a blind taste... practice makes perfect, right?

This still needs more time. Perhaps another 2-4 years. It’s pretty big. Tobacco. Cherry.
