Wonderwall (margaret River)

Leeuwin Estate

Art Series Margaret River Chardonnay 2016

Presented double-blind. The wine pours a light straw color with medium viscosity and no signs of particles or gas. On the nose, the wine is developing with tart and ripe notes of apple, pear, underripe pineapple, lemon curd, nuts and minerals. I felt like there was some deft use of oak. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+, bordering on high acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and chocked full of minerals. My immediate impression was Bourgogne Blanc and I was having a hard time getting away from it. So I called Chardonnay, from France, Burgundy, Chassagne-Montrachet with 3-5 years of age. Gosh dammit! Margaret River strikes again!!! Blind, I always seem to call these Chablis or some other high quality white Burg. And I adore the Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnays. They always impress me. Drink now through 2036. — 11 days ago

Vasse Felix

Margaret River Chardonnay 2017

This is the 2nd rated Vasse Felix Chardonnay behind the world class Heytesbury and ahead of the amazing value Filius. This was my last 2017 having made no notes for the first two. Expresses everything which is great about Margaret River Chardonnay. Complexity without cost. Ripe grapefruit with a balanced creamy French oak note which is largely integrated at 7 years of age. More citrus than stone fruit - a little nectarine? Great QPR at $31 AUD. — 2 months ago

@Bob McDonald, I wish I could find this and the Heytesbury here on the U.S. West Coast — Vasse Felix really does great stuff at such low price points!!

Woodlands

Chloe Chardonnay 2015

My last bottle of 2015 Woodlands Chloe. Quite restrained - very well made. Everything in balance at 9 years of age. Last bottle we had was in early 2023 - matched with the 2015 Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay and some tasters preferred the 2015 Chloe. White peach. Not too lean, not too full bodied - perfect balance - a “goldilocks” Margaret River Chardonnay. Woodlands is better known for its stellar Cabernet and Cabernet blends but also makes this fine Chardonnay. — 3 months ago

Had my first Woodlands last week, the 2019 “Ruby Jane” Margaret River Cabernet. Very nice.

Moss Wood

Margaret River Sémillon 2022

Not like the favored semillions recalled from my youth. (OK, with time it’s blossomed up a point to 90.) — 21 days ago

Filius Margaret River Chardonnay 2020

Somewhat lush and fat up front, plenty of acidity to balance, more depth and complexity than the Xanadu, medium-long finish. — 2 months ago
