Waiheke Island, Auckland

Kennedy Point

Syrah 2004

Wow - this has been in suspended animation for the past 5 years - eerily similar to previous note. This is an estate owned by an American woman, on a small island near Auckland NZ with a Swiss winemaker. — 21 days ago

Dunleavy Waiheke Island Cabernet Merlot 2012

Picked this up walking around Waiheke a few years ago. Super nice, dry, peppery, blackberry, good tannins — 5 months ago

Kumeu River

Maté's Vineyard Chardonnay 2012

Really nothing much more to add from my (and other Delectable users) previous notes about this incredible Chardonnay. Notes of pear, pineapple and cashew. Creamy on the palate. Simply put - a top shelf new world Chardonnay - now drinking at its peak. — 16 days ago

Bought some 2018's recently upon reading your reviews. Better wait a while before opening I suppose

@Jan A I think so Jan. If you want to experience the style see if you can locate some of their 2019 or 2020 Village Chardonnay. I have a few bottles of the 2019 left where I paid $19AUD. Great Value. I believe the 2020 has just been released.

Kumeu River

Estate Chardonnay 2018

Talk about cost performance! If you ever find this on sale and like white burgs, load up. Some oak on it but plenty of tension, acidity that keep it all in check. Always a crowd pleaser and sure to surprise those that have yet to discover the potential of NZ wines. — 3 months ago

Kistler esque. Lots of oak with notes of ripe citrus and verbena but also great minterality and verve. It’s like old world meets new world. Very well done but maybe a bit heavy handed honestly. Not sure if I love it or hate it quite yet — 2 months ago

@Ira Schwartz 2016. It’s super fleshy but also very mineral. It honestly reminds me of blind tasting rombauer. It has some banana which I hate but some green apple malic feel at the same time which I generally love. Maybe a generic yeast or something that turns me off but I love the structure

I want to love it more than I do but rated it highly cause it’s super well made

Man O' War Vineyards

Dreadnought Waiheke Island Syrah 2012

Mid to deep crimson in colour. Aromas of red berries, a little oak, a bunchie stalky note, spices including nutmeg and a dash of chocolate. Medium plus bodied quite northern Rhone in style more than SA. Not dissimilar to another excellent North Island Syrah as in Trinity Hill, Hawkes Bay. Very good, very tasty. From the unlikely destination of Waiheke Island which is in the middle of Auckland Harbour, which is massive in area compared to Sydney Harbour. One would think the rainfall might be a little high for quality viticulture but not so. Also when you think that one of the best new world Chardonnays in Kumeu River is made just to the north of Auckland. — 4 months ago

@ESF Fun fact about Waiheke Island You might recall that Tiger Woods had a New Zealand caddy for many years. When Tiger got married and almost at the height of his popularity he had part of his honeymoon on Waiheke Island so I was told by locals. Great for the privacy - organised by the caddy.
