At Mark Paul NYD Party old Cab series. This as Australian example and it is an outstanding wine on its own. Actually a Bordeaux style blend and matured beautifully, just call it delicious — 6 months ago

From Virgin Wines (from Jim). Nice, deep rich red. Smooth, very tobacco-ey notes, lots of current and dark berry flavours — 4 years ago

A good example of a Barolo, salvaged from the wreckage of Virgin Velocity scheme. Medium light, brown but not over. A very fine taste.

Pinotage 2010

Shiraz not pinotage but label not recognised. From Virgin Wines, this is great, full of flavour, very smooth. More woody and less fruity than would be perfect but that's nitpicking. — 9 years ago

Savigny-Les-Beaune Pinot Noir 2020

2020 vintage. Holy bleep! Tasted approx 5 months ago and was great bang for the buck but even more evident now. Super red Burg value! Smoky, savory and medium-heavy bodied. Big frontal fruit punch that consistently rolls through to the back door with enough acidity for balance. Fun, frisky and ‘fordable which doesn’t happen very often in the (red) Burgundian realm. Last tasted approx a month ago but drinking even better now. Would honestly be afraid of proffering this up to a red Burgundy “virgin” because it would completely destroy all current and future QPR expectations from the entire region for them forever. For y’all old fart, red Burg honks-enjoy. 3.8.23. — 3 years ago

Novelty Hill

Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Novelty Hill borrows from the ancient Latin phrase In Novale Novello, “in virgin ground I plant young vines,” for its name. I didn’t realize that there aren’t vines on the actual Novelty Hill in Washington (located about 5 miles east of Redmond). Oh well, so much for my Hill vs Hill face-off with Pritchard Hill’s Bryant Family. This 2014 Novelty Hill Cabernet Sauvignon talks some serious smack, and even brings a serious punch, but that would have been Go-Karts vs Formula One. That said, this is one hell of a Go-Kart. In the low $20s, my first comparison is to Charles Smith’s Substance Cs, and this blows the doors off that wine, and more than justifies its slightly higher price-point. Jumps out of the glass with black cherry, cassis, mocha, licorice, and a heavily spiced cranberry potpourri, while still managing to weave in a savory undertone that emphasizes the noticeable balance. Washington offers extraordinary value across the board, but this is a value even by Washington standards. 92+ — 8 years ago

Il Bandito dalla Vigna Costamaria Riesling

Smoky pear, yellow apples, fresh cut hay on a verdant farm the day after a rain. Lemon croissant with a brush of glazed sugar, lemon zest, chive, and satin petals of azalea outline the perfume. There is a freshness of clean, laundered, sun-dried whites. Medium mouthfeel with distinct white pepper, extra virgin oil, tart apple, lemon essences, peach skin, culminating in a silky dryness, full of tangerine and kumquat piths. Serve with substantive fare, and spiciness. It has the unction! #oltrepopavese #giorgi #CannetoPavese #bianco #Riesling #rieslingfix #italianwines #italianwhite #italianwhitewine — 9 years ago

Mastroberardino

Naturalis Historia Taurasi Aglianico 2015

Pungent, perfumed nose of violets blasted through a chipper shredder with jasmine and magnolia blossoms; a pronounced balsamic dash underlies. Virgin rose petals catch the bouquet. Ripe red grapes undulate in rich soils.
Red cherries blacken on the palate, shedding roll-ups raincoats in a hail of dusty tannins tart and black cassis and currant with resinous dark cigar heads, espresso beans and bergamot coated in dark , bitter chocolate. Sweet teeth to beast freak.

Riserva Cappellaccio Castel del Monte Aglianico 2009

Named after 'cappellaccio' or gossan, the hard layer about 30-40 cm down in tufaceous soils formed over the centuries by water erosion of limestone. Planting vineyards on such virgin soils required deep-ripping so that vine roots could penetrate it and reach water. Aged for 12 months in French oak. Deep red with ripe fruit aromas and subtle spice. Flavors of dark berry, leather and pepper. Lingering finish ending with a mineral character. — 8 years ago
