Williams Selyem

Burt Williams' Morning Dew Ranch Pinot Noir 2011

Somm David T
9.4

So Williams Selyem Pinots should be treated is the same fashion as good burgundy, with age. It will always be somewhat sweeter than red burgundy but nonetheless very good.

This shows w/ an array of mid berry fruits accompanied by some darker fruits. Strawberries, cherries, pomegranate, cranberries, raspberries, hint of rhubarb, blackberries and haunting blueberries. Mid berry cola, red licorice, fruit tea, eucalyptus, pine tar notes, pine tree bark, dark, rich soils/earth, dry herbs, mid, dark spice, dry crushed rocks, dry limestone powder, black pepper notes, dry river stone, dry fall leaves, bright florals that are; red, blue, purple with a mix of red & pink roses, late spring waterfall acidity with extreme balance, tension, structure with elegance & smart polish for days and long sets on tree bark/sap & spice.

Still ascending.

Domaine Billard-Gonnet

Pommard-Rugiens Bas 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2007

Our first bottle of this producer. Very classical in style, clean crystalline and with lots of balance on mature but elegant tanins. Dark cherries, anise, spices and roses in an old fashion and highly tasty burg. Drink or hold. We liked it a great great deal. — 5 years ago

Tobelos

Rioja Garnacha

An opulent nose of raspberries and jam, that opens onto the palate in juicy fashion. Plum is what’s prime on the palate, and while very silky on the approach there is some backbone that holds the fruit together. The Tobelos Garnacha is in the running for the “Vanishing Middle Class Cheeseburger Wine of the Year” — 6 years ago

Roche Winery

Carneros Pinot Noir 2006

Bright ruby with a ripe nose of spiced plum, cherries, anise and sandalwood. The round supple tannins and bright acidity show off the black cherry, cola, bacon and cedar in a feminine fashion. The finish is light and soft with sappy undertones. — 6 years ago

Dirty & Rowdy

Shake Ridge Ranch Mourvedre 2016

Typical Dirty and Rowdy fashion. Shake Ridge fruit has always been interesting to me. The nose tends to be much more pronounced than other Dirty and Rowdy Mourvèdre’s. Strawberries, canned cranberries, orange zest. Little grip on the mouth. Cannot wait to see how this wine evolves. Fantastic Thanksgiving wine! — 7 years ago

Maurice Vesselle

Brut Millésimé Grand Cru Champagne Blend 2013

Maurice Vesselle is a récoltant whose small estate of maybe 15 acres, is in Bouzy and Tours sur Marnes. Most of their vineyards, all Grand Cru, are dedicated to Pinot Noir with the balance, Chardonnay. They are a strict no-malo, all INOX producer. One other note, the corks on these bottles are so stubborn. I had one hell of a time getting it extracted in an elegant fashion. We had people over and I was multitasking, making the risotto which, of course, needed my undivided attention. Ultimately, I ended up grabbing the Wüsthof and sabering that mf’er.

So, sabered and poured. The wine is a straw color with medium- viscosity and a persistent mousse. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of strawberry, light brioche, lemons, marzipan and limestone minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with high acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long, mineral driven and zippy! This needs a ton of air at this stage but if you allow it, what a treat! Better after 2025 through 2043. The Millésimé is typically 80/20, Pinot Noir/Chardonnay. Dosage 4g/l (and seems it). Disgorged June 2023.

Jacques Selosse

Initial Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Champagne Chardonnay

Initial is the most produced in quantity and can be referred to as the “entry level” bottling for Selosse but really, it is anything but, and should not be overlooked. Particularly so with some bottle age. 2018 disgorgment is in a great spot and wafts from the glass with distinctive Selossien aromas of caramelized stone fruit, roasted nuts, honeycomb, gun smoke and floral undertones. The palate is rich, powerful and deep with racy acids and a chalky mineral core. It has both freshness and oxidative complexity yielding a complete, balanced and utterly seamless Champagne. Selosse perfection for me is 5-6 years post disgorgement and this is entering that window in great fashion. Always a treat. — 4 years ago

Seavey Vineyard

Caravina Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

We opened this bottle late on Friday night and poured off a small glass to see what we were working with. As I suspected, far too young with loads of energy, rolls of baby fat and frankly, not very well behaved. So we pressed the cork back in the bottle and figured we would try our luck the next day when my parents stopped by for a socially distant glass of wine to “celebrate” Easter together. I’m so glad we waited. Twelve or so hours of slow-ox made a huge difference. While it was still very primary, it was much more enjoyable showing a strong core of dark berries, tobacco, leather, coffee and baking spices. But again, where Seavey really excels is texture and sense of place. To be expected for mountain fruit at this age, the tannins are firm but reasonable and there is such lovely acid that screams Howell Mountain. I have no doubt this will have a very bright future! In my mind, Caravina is probably the greatest “second” wine in Napa. This is Seavey’s 19th and latest vintage of Caravina. After an extended drought, 2017 began with torrential rain that flooded the valley. The fruit comes entirely from steep hillside blocks on the estate and is otherwise made in the same fashion as the Grand Vin. If you’re going to drink one now, I highly recommend a lengthy decant as these are easily 10 years away from their best. — 6 years ago

Stags' Leap Winery

Napa Valley Chardonnay 2016

A beautiful example of restrained oak allowing pristine fruit to shine through. Here is crisp acidity without harshness, and bright lemon and apple fruit with just a hint of spice from the oak. A vibrant wine in the fashion of Burgundy rather than the typical Napa oak bomb. No need for oak's heavy hand to disguise flaws in the fruit - there aren't any. I had it with cedar-planked salmon and it was a gorgeous match — 8 years ago

Del Bondio

Biltmore Estate Collection 'Antler Hill' Cabernet Sauvignon

A full bodied cab that presents sharply on the tip of the tongue and dances backward along the center as your tongue curls inward forming a tunnel in a gratifying fashion. The tail does not disappoint as it stays leaving a lasting satisfying feeling. Sour notes of member berries lace the edges of the sconce with a petering of plumbus at the finish. — 8 years ago

Domaine Francois Bertheau

Chambolle-Musigny Pinot Noir 2015

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of a couple hours. The 2015 pours a ruby color with a transparent core; medium viscosity with no staining of the tears. In typical Francois Bertheau fashion, this was initially quite shy on the nose but with about 30min of air in the glass, the wine is developing with notes of ripe and tart red fruits: strawberry, cranberry, red flowers, chanterelles, forest floor and a gentle mix of cool and warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+. Never one to shout above a crowd to announce its presence, instead, the wines of Pierre e Francois Bertheau allow their quiet confidence to make the statement; an increasingly rare characteristic. An elegant, ethereal beauty. Drink now with some patience and time for deliberation and enjoyment, through 2035. — a year ago

Giacomo Fenocchio

Villero Barolo Nebbiolo 2010

Tonight, this bottle of 2010 Fenocchio Barolo “Villero” gave a masterclass on the character and virtues of the Villero MGA. I have always felt that massive patience would be required for the 2010 vintage since the wines are so structured. However, the Villero fruit, as it so often does, showed through with aplomb. The most prized parcels are located in the upper portions of the vineyard and this is where Giacomo Fenocchio’s holdings reside.

Opened and simply allowed to breathe for about an hour before dinner. In the glass, the wine pours a luminous ruby color with a transparent core. No staining of the tears. Medium+ viscosity. On the nose, the wine is expressive with notes of dark cherries, sandalwood, anise, fresh red roses and tar. On the palate, the wine is bone dry and the structure, in typical 2010 fashion, remains monumental…even at 12 years of age. In fact, the tannin seemed to build as the hours went by. That being said, the fruit was still abundant and full of class: cherries, forest strawberries, dry earth, spiced meat and minerals. Juicy and textured at the same time and the finish was hedonistic. While this is already drinking so well, this will have a long life. Drink now with patience and through 2040.

Virginie de Valandraud

St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2016

It’s been about 6 months since I last tried the 2016 Virginie de Valandraud which, really isn’t a true 2nd wine of Chateau Valandraud. In fact, it’s made in the same fashion as the Grand Vin by the same team but from separate terroir. The wine pours a deep, impenetrable, glass staining ruby and there’s already a bunch of sediment coating the inside of the bottle. The nose is high intensity, with currants, tobacco, bell pepper, purple flowers, smoke, and baking spice. On the palate, the wine is generous with perfectly ripe dark fruits, tobacco, earth and baking spice. Finish is bone dry. This is a dense, extracted wine yet it remains balanced. The structure is firm but not overbearing. Great acid. While this is really good stuff now, I expect it will continue to evolve for many years to come. Check back in another 6-10 years. — 5 years ago

Cavallotto

Vigna del Cuculo Superiore Barbera d'Alba 2016

2020 spring / summer. While the swing back towards traditional winemaking in Barolo and Barbaresco is wonderful to see, it seems that there are still many banner barberas made with lots of new oak and the like. There are plenty of simple, delicious barberas made in a balanced fashion, finding a traditionally-made wine exploring barbera’s potential in top sites isn’t all that common. Here’s an example of why that’s a shame - effusive with black and red fruit, concentrated without being heavy, balancing acidity and tannin, and a bit of spice — 6 years ago

A. Rafanelli

Dry Creek Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

“Let me tell you somethin’! Let me tell you...✋🏼. Don’t drink these now. Seriously. Just don’t. Five years from now? That’s probably okay. But not now. Unless...unless you are willing to decant for an extended period of time or slow-ox for three days. Patience will be rewarded however if you allow time to do its work. Only then do you get the classic Rafanelli of red and dark fruit with chocolate, coffee, tobacco and baking spices; executed in a most seductive fashion. Sound structure. The finish is long. This is a great vintage from Rafanelli with a long life ahead. Better after 2025. — 7 years ago

The Standish Wine Company

Single Vineyard Shiraz 2005

Somm David T
9.6

This is absolutely one of my top three favorite producers from Barossa. Dan Standish marches to his own drum when it comes to his Winemaking. He doesn’t follow trends or fashion in winemaking. Before he started his own Winery, he was the Winemaker for Torbreck and also traveled to other world wine regions before settling back in Barossa. I had the privilege of spending a couple of hours last April with him. What a joy to listen, learn and laugh with him. This wine comes from 100 year old vines. While it is excellent, keeps getting better and puts on weight in the glass, its just a notch under his “Relic.” He has no US importer as he sells out to his mailing list. He’ll ship it to you, but shipping charges from Australia are simply stupid. You’ll find some of his wines on the secondary market. On the nose; smoldering ambers, black plum, black raspberries, dark cherries, olallieberries, huckleberries, blueberries, loamy dry soils, crushed rocks, spice, sour dark liqueur notes, dry stones, light baking spices, dark turned earth, well done toast, dry lavender, lilacs and fresh violets. The body is rich, lush and beautiful. The tannins are about a year or two farther along than I’m used to tasting, 80% resolved. The palate is simply and flat out amazing. The fruits are; juicy, ruby, ripe and stun the senses. Black plum, plum, black raspberries, raspberries, dark cherries, olallieberries, huckleberries, boysenberries, blueberries with a mid red fruit mix haunting the background of the palate here & there. The dark medium spices are more refined than the “Relic” and have a perfect heat lifting intensifying quality off the palate. Loamy soils, black licorice, anise, cracked pepper, crushed rocks, dark turned earth, tarry notes, dry stems, an amazing blend of baking spices-clove, nutmeg & a whiff of vanilla, dry herbaceous quality, dry lavender & lilacs and fresh violets for days. Perfect round acidity, excellent; structure, length, tension and balance. Long beautiful finish that doesn’t end. This is First Growth Shiraz!
