Gonzalez Byass’ flagship wine is 100% Palomino from the Macharnudo and Carrascal vineyards, aged for 4 years under flor in the Tio Pepe solera, started in the 1830s by the bodega founder’s uncle José Ángel (“tío Pepe” or “Uncle Joe”). At that time, Jerez was known for its exports of dark Amontillado and Oloroso, but Uncle Joe decided to reserve a few casks for the dry, lighter style of Fino he and other locals liked to drink. The wine rapidly took off and by the 1860s it was being exported to all major markets. Pale straw color. Sharp nose with aromas of almonds, green olives and yeast. Light, fresh, clean on the palate. Slightly saline — 2 months ago

Major decant needed. Nose is closed on open.
As it opens some lovely herbal notes.
Palate is clean. Tight. Closed.
As it opens tight cherry. Gorgeous.
Much better on day 2. delicious licorice. Fresh cherry fruit. Nose is blasting. Hand crushed mid season cherries. Spice. Roses. Some chocolate on the finish.
Either wait 5 years or decant 5 hours.

A great wine for bordeaux lovers. — 3 months ago
I picked this up in Costco in Monterey ca, was very happy with it. Is not overly yeasty on the nose which I like and a clean dry finish my two major requirements. It tasted better than that yellow label champagne with a less expensive price point. I hoped I helped. — 21 days ago

Nose is intense. Cherry incense.
Palate is elegant cherry liquor on open.
Very Intense finish. Cherry liquor.
Needs major air on open. Dense but right. Will check back.
As this opens you get this velvety texture. Some plums on the palate. Very fresh and vibrant.
On day 2 much better. Nose is psychotic perfume. Palate is deep cherry. Cherry spice. Very good density. Almost a sweet spice. Delicious. This will be a monster in 3-4 years. Elite level burgundy density with great aromatics. Terrific brisset precision.

Decanted 2 hours. Fairly retrained on the nose, getting some red and black fruit and oak. A little burst of black/red fruit with a light punch of cassis. Earthy, balanced and restrained. Hints of vanilla and pipe tobacco. Drinking well but I need to leave some to age a few more years, this can go a lot further. — 21 days ago
