St. Péray, Northern Rhône

Domaine Bernard Gripa

St. Joseph Syrah 2019

Decided to try one of these guys. Somewhat surprised - more accessible and quite a bit glossier than I was expecting. The 14.5% is well balanced with great acid. Nice deep berry fruit but perhaps doesn’t have as much of those characteristic St. Joseph briny, earthy, olivey, somewhat rustic notes as expected. Nice pairing with shepherd’s pie made from leftovers from Christmas. — 11 days ago

"Les Granits" Saint Joseph Syrah 2012

Love this wine and producer. Maybe a little too far a long for its age but still so enjoyable. Good value, quality wine. Paired with beef wellington — 13 days ago

Domaine des Miquettes

St. Joseph Syrah 2017

This tastes way younger than a ‘17. Nose has classic St Joe granite scents and bright mountain berry fruit. On the palate it’s super bright, with electric acids allowing it to keep playing with the kool kids despite its age. Medium bodied. Never heard of this producer previously. But will buy if I see again. This was bought off a bistro wine list. — 2 months ago

Vignes de l'Hospice Saint-Joseph Syrah 2019

Nose of dark and red fruit, tar, baking spice and some floral notes. Medium acidity plus acidity, long finish, plum, black pepper, well integrated tannins that is present but not in your face, black tea. — 7 months ago

Pierre Gonon

Saint-Joseph Syrah 2023

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of a few hours. The 2023 pours a ruby/purple color with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with an explosion of smoked blackberry pie, purple flowers, bacon fat, olive, black pepper, and subtle warm spices. On the palate the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium acid. Confirming the notes from the nose however, the wine finishes much more elegant than the nose would suggest. The bouquet might lead one to think this is possibly over the top. However, on the palate, it was far more elegant. Another vintage, another stunning Gonon. Drink now through 2043. — a month ago
