St. Joseph

Domaine de la Côte Sainte-Epine

Vieilles Vignes St. Joseph Marsanne Roussanne Blend 2017

Needs an hour to integrate. Then is majesty. Nose of a tropical fruit basket. Palate is mineral and the essence of tropical fruit - guava papaya. But not overwhelming as it lives with the minerality. Brightly acidic. Moderate pleasant richness. An iconic northern Rhône white. Bought from Fass selections. — 14 days ago

Marandy St. Joseph Syrah 2014

Coop and I splurged on this ($25) at Jeff’s shop after a long discussion about Rhône wines and wanting to learn more. We thoroughly enjoyed it with an antipasto-style dinner. Nose: pine shavings, raspberry jam, dried cherries, tar, earth. Taste: multilayered, medium to full, cherry, leather, tobacco, charcoal. Delish and we drank it while watching Somm: into the bottle — 7 days ago

Domaine Coursodon (Jérôme et Pierre Coursodon)

Le Paradis Saint Pierre Saint Joseph Syrah 2009

One of the finest St Josephs I’ve ever tasted. Quiet, calm, utterly pure Syrah that’s complete and close to perfection. Not trying to be anything other than the stately, refined thing it is. Reminds me of what this appellation was when no one wanted these wines and nobody cared. — 6 days ago

Vieiles Vignes Saint Joseph Syrah 2016

Exemplifies the 2016 vintage for N. Rhône, balance of concentration, elegance, and perfume. Nose is great combination high-toned/savory notes of peppercorn, bay leaf, woodsmoke, bramble, crushed blackberry, violet, candied olive, licorice candy. Palate confirms the nose, spice-driven, young and taut with its mineral and earthy tones driving through the finish. Tannins have great texture and power with some pliancy to them, approachable now — 4 days ago

St. Joseph Syrah 2014

Luscious ripe fruit, green peppercorn, and funk on the nose. Lovely fruit in the back, dry, and smooth. All over the map! So many flavors. Ripe cherry, mushroom, graphite, gravel, and shale. Smelled sweet, but dry. Unfortunately it is also a bit pn the sour side. Opened 1 hour. — 11 days ago

Saint-Joseph Syrah 2016

Nice. Overridingly purple. But still quite delicious, just with a little less of the peppery / earthy Syrah notes than expected. — 9 days ago

Big cherry and berry nose. Smoke, Olive, leather, mint, spice, herbs de Provence, lavender, glorious nose, floral, and so deep and pretty and layered. Palate is super juicy, young and grapey. Fine grained tannins and terrific acidity and freshness. Good granite finish. Lovely. — 18 days ago

100% Syrah. Brimming with blackberries and plums. Black pepper, graphite, smoked meat and tea, with an earthy note. Beautiful Northern Rhône wine. Wine Spectator awarded 93 points.
