Château Talbot

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2016

This estate owes its name to Connetable Talbot, the English general & governor of the province of Guyenne who was defeated at the famous Battle of Castillon in 1453. Aromas of sweet black fruits with floral and earthy notes. On the palate flavors of blackberry & blueberry with cacao and tobacco spice, on a well balanced frame. Fine rustic tannins, long savory ending with fruit, spice and cedar character. — 10 days ago

Château Cos d'Estournel

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 1990

I was very interested in trying this bottle for myself, as I know I’d seen a little Insta-negativity surrounding it 😅. There’s complex aromatics of cassis, savory herbs, tobacco, truffle, graphite and mint. Initially it’s heavily herbaceous and driven by its aged secondary character, probably more so than to my liking.

But, it really turns a corner and picks up weight and fruit expression after about an hour or so in the decanter. At this time it shows an open and seductive profile with a velvety texture and a balanced expression of fruit and tertiary character which lead to a very persistent finish. Overall I enjoyed this bottle, as my expectations were in check, although it doesn’t compare to Montrose in this vintage which is utterly superb.

Château Clarisse

Puisseguin-Saint-Émilion Merlot Cabernet Franc Blend 2014

2014 vintage. This is so impressive with an incredible perfume of truffle and red fruit. Very elegant and precise with layers of fruit and subtle spices, energetic acidity and a long mineral finish. This estate has fine terroir and the owners are determined to show it. Grab this one by the case if you can! Abv. 13,5 %. — 3 days ago

Nose of plum, blackberry, and earth. On the palate, black fruits dominate, with plum, earth, and black pepper. Finish goes on quite a while, with drying black fruits. Pleasantly surprised by this wine. Drink, or hold up to 10 years.

This was another good bottle that was polished & silky with red berry, plum fruits, mocha & spice. 98 Right Banks are just starting to enter their drinking window with many years ahead. — 19 hours ago

Château Calon-Ségur

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 1982

Second excellent super aged wine in a couple of weeks. First the $11.99 1978 Ch Beaucastel CDP and now the 1982 Calon Sequr, don’t have a price on this as it was an anniversary gift from my wife but sure not anywhere close to the current vintage costs. Anyway, the color was bright and clear and no brick edge at all. The nose and taste were complex with herbs, dried cherries and some pencil lead & cedar. Very smooth drinking with no hard edges and a very nice long finish. I opened, decanted and tasted right away and it seemed quite closed. Had with dinner about 3 hours later and it was all there. Kept a bit in the glass and had that after the boring Eagles game and no changes. I would not hold this wine any longer and why would you anyway, drink up and enjoy. Why do some 44 and 40 year old wines hold so well when others fade away so early? — 17 days ago

@Jerry Raphael I think the excellent 1982 vintage in Bordeaux would have a lot to do with how well this wine showed.

Château Les Gravières

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend 2018

(94-96 RP, 93 Vinous)
Tasted over 3 days and changed a lot, but what a massive wine this is. New style Bordeaux(?), if it is i liked it. Full bodied and velvet on the last day. First fresh with some good acidity, on the second day more austere with tannic structure. On the nose it has graphite, tobacco, some smoke, fresh flowers (violets, lavendel). Palate of cherries, plums and blackcurrant, chocolate, mocha and licorice. Give it 5 years or a long decant. Superb p/q (91++…)

Château Rol Valentin

St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2010

This was even better than the Rams were and not nearly as hard-hitting. Luscious and fleshy Merlot-driven, chocolate and maraschino cherry. Charred graphite frame, cool secondary notes of red flowers and Asian spice. Perfect place. — 8 days ago

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

Le Petit Ducru Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2018

If you drink a lot of pleasant, simple wine (like I do), the first complex wine in a while can wake the sense like a Wim Hoff ice bath. Le Petit Ducru is also a due reminder that I should drink more Bordeaux.

Intense, rich, layered. Pours velvet ribbons of violet tinted motor oil. About 100 layers of aromatics - cassis, syrupy blackberries, leather, coffee, milk chocolate. Big juicy grippy tannin. Flavors of dark cherry plum, mocha, laden with minerals and juicy berries. Real symphony on hand.
